Product Contrast/ Comparison The aim of this paper is to examine differences and similarities of two software products: Microsoft Office 2003 (Microsoft Corporation) and WordPerfect Office 12 (Corel Corporation).
First of all, both Offices are created for computer users to enhance their work and both of them propose specially developed editions for home users, enterprise editions and editions for non-commercial use only. As well as Corel Corporation, Microsoft Corporation created several editions of Microsoft Office 2003. Each edition is specially designed for group of users (Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003, Microsoft Office Professional Enterprise Edition 2003, Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003, and Standard Edition).
MS Standard Edition includes Excel 2003, Outlook 2003, PowerPoint 2003, and Word 2003. WP Standard Edition has WordPerfect 12 (similar to Word), Quattro Pro 12 (similar to Excel), Presentations 12 (similar to PowerPoint), and Paradox (similar to MS database).
Besides, WordPerfect allows working with HTML, CSS, XML and PDF.
In contrast to PowerPoint 2003, Presentations 12 proposes special technology Show on the Go that allows watching presentations even in case computer has no Presentations 12 installed. Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 consists of all programs of MS Office SE 2003 and includes additional support for Extensible Markup Language (XML) and information rights management (IRM) and allows you to use Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for the Microsoft Office System. MS Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 comprises of all programs of MS Office SE 2003 but is intended for non-commercial use only. WordPerfect Office 12 Business Edition consists of several programs: WordPerfect 12, Quattro Pro 12, Presentations 12, Paint Shop Pro 9, Word Perfect Mail, Word Perfect OfficeReady Business Essentials, Word Perfect OfficeReady Business Plans, Norton Internet Security 2005, and Task Manager. Although WP Office BE has no program that allows publishing documents in internet (Publisher 2003), it proposes Norton Internet Security Suite and Task Manager that allows planning tasks (however, MS Outlook has built-in feature of task planning that can be a sound alternative to Task Manager).
One of the novelties, proposed by WordPerfect Office, is WordPerfect Wireless Office Suite that provides users with software developed to synchronize with mobile phones and tools. Besides, in contrast to MS Office, WordPerfect allows user creating documents in *.pdf format without use of Adobe Acrobat or other professional instruments. Both Offices have software for creating documents (WordPerfect 12 and MS Word 2003), software for transforming data into spreadsheets and tables (Quattro Pro 12 and Excel 2003), and creating presentations (Presentations 12 and PowerPoint 2003).
However, WordPerfect has no mail client in standard edition. Its Perfect Mail is developed for Small Business Edition only, whereas Outlook Express as a part of MS Outlook is an integral part of any MS Office package. As far as we can see, WordPerfect Office 12 can be positioned as perfect alternative to Microsoft Office software packages. Corels product is cheaper and simpler in use. It proposes all main features necessary for effective work. However, the main disadvantage is lack of mail client in SE.
