Robin Hood’s basic strategic vision is to eradicate the Sheriff of Nottingham and his organization because the Sheriff’s taxes were too high. The strategic vision must be expanded to what will happen to Robin Hood and the Merrymen when the Sheriff has been eliminated. For instance, what will become of the band? Will they continue to serve a purpose after the Sheriff and his men are gone? The strategic vision should speak to what Robin Hood and his men represent, and how they may work together in the future. 2. What is Robin Hood’s current mission?
Robin Hood’s current mission is to steal from the rich and give to the poor. The Merrymen are currently doing this by relying on rich travelers who come through Sherwood Forest, where they are robbed so that the poor may be fed and so that the band may continue to operate. Unfortunately, the mission is beginning to fail because the band has expanded so dramatically that resources are under a large strain, and because travelers have begun avoiding the forest because they know they will be robbed. 3. What issues are currently facing Robin Hood that he needs to address? Because the band of Merrymen has become so large, a procedure should be put into place for future recruiting. Any potential recruits should have a skill set that would be valuable to the band, whether it is farming skills that can help the band rely on homegrown food to survive and that could eventually decrease the need to trade or barter for goods, to those who have proven fighting skills that may be put to use in the battlefield, to those who have weapon forging skills. Those potential recruits who have no skills to offer the band must be turned away. By becoming selective with the recruiting process, the financial strain will be lessened once the band becomes more self-sufficient. Strength no longer lies in number when resources and discipline have dwindled. Discipline is another area that should be addressed immediately. With a growing band of Merrymen, it is no longer feasible to leave management to the four lieutenants. A more practical mission should be to remove Prince John, the Sheriff of Nottingham, and the Sheriff’s men from power so that the poor will no longer live in fear of excessive taxation. Robin Hood should also consider a way to join the effort to bring King Richard the Lionhearted back from imprisonment in Austria. When his band of Merrymen first congregated in Sherwood Forest, the element of surprise was in their favor because the group was small. By forming a much smaller band from the original group of Merrymen, Robin Hood could easily offer protection to the barons who wish to collect the ransom that would free King Richard.
