Source a is dealing with two different sources but both about the subject which is Prohibition. Many of historians have their own opinion about it, but the main question is of these two-account show much do they agree on about Prohibition. Source A is a section of writing that was published in 1973 and was taken from a history book. They clearly state that historians disagree about what was mainly to blame for the introduction of prohibition. By 1917 twenty-three states had already had the ban instated that is stated in the source.
Main possible explanations that are stated in the source are the bad influences saloons, wartime concern for preserving grain for food, feeling against the German Americans who were important in brewing and distilling and the influence of the Anti-saloon league t a time when large numbers of men were absent in the armed forces. Even though many people were against prohibition on the other hand there were many people who were for it. This is shown in the source when they state the twenty-three states had already become ‘dry’. The source also states that is was mainly men this is shown when they say that the armed forces numbers were very low.
The reason that there were bad feeling between the Americans and the German Americans were because World War 1 had not taken place to long ago. The source also states that it had created the biggest criminal boom in American history and perhaps in all modern history.” No earlier law had gone against the daily customs of so many Americans.” This last sentence of the source is very important because it sums everything into one line and I know that the source agreed with the key question because of that sentence. Source B is taken from a history book as well but was published in 1979. This source explains more what happened after prohibition had come into law. The source tells us about the organisations that were supporting the ban on alcohol such as the Women’s Christian Temperance union and the Anti saloon league.

Both of these organisations wanted to put an end to alcoholism. they did this by putting pressure on congress to ban the use of grain for either brewing or distilling. This proves to me that there were many people who were in favour of the ban. The Prohibition Commissioner had high hopes to and helps support the ban he appointed 1500 m prohibition agents.
On a negative side though the source also tells us about the rise of gangsters such as Dutch Schulz and Al Capone. They even go as far as to quote Al Capone where he says;” Prohibition is a business; all I do is supply a public demand.” In my opinion he might as well have said yes I selling alcohol and Yes I am breaking the law. To sum the source up it tells us about the organisations the helped change the constitution and the gangsters that benefited from it. Both of the sources agree on the issue of the anti-saloon league, which were that alcohol was bad on all accounts. The creation of various anti saloon leagues which ten went on to change the constitution of America is mentioned in both of the sources. This shows the there were many people in favour of prohibition but that they were still in a minority.
Both sources note that it caused the greatest criminal boom in American history but it is only source B that goes into detail and goes on to mention specific gangsters such as Dutch Schulz and Al Capone. Al Capone was rumoured to have made over $100 million just by manufacturing of illegal alcohol. The main difference between the two sources are that source B only mentions the anti-saloon league and says that the success of this group led to the constitution and the Voluted act where as source A gives six different reasons why prohibition was introduced. On a whole both sources are suggesting how prohibition was achieved and how it affected America as a country. Because of prohibition America suffered a huge crime increase and both sources agree on that point. They wanted to ban alcohol because many people in America thought that it was harmful to you and because of that they wanted to get rid out it.

I think the poster it’s self is not a very good one if they were trying to promote prohibition. They did have the right idea but went about it in the wrong way for example the title” the poor man’s club ” The most expensive in the world to belong to. I think that those words are very effective but are put to shame with the picture that goes with it. I think the words are referring to the fact that saloon were where a lot of people with not a lot of money went to get away from their worries.
But also that even though they did not have very much money they would spend it on alcohol which was very expensive. The picture shows the actual saloon and it seems to be pretty nice. One point that works against the poster is the fact that the man purchasing the alcohol seems happy and well dressed, which might lead u to think that he can afford to drink. Also bad things are usually connected to salons but the bartender seems a jolly fellow who seems very welcoming. The insert picture in the corner tells a different story though.

You can see a women crying on a table with a baby next to her. There is a quote above which states ” the saloon is well named… the poor mans club… it keeps its member’s and family’s poor.” Reading this it makes u feel unhappy but for me is not enough for me because the insert is so small I feel that it is not really a problem.
Source D is a poster 1915. This poster compared to the other one is more straightforward and effective in my opinion. Although is very simple and plain it has a very deep meaning. The picture shows a little boy clutching onto a girl who is staring at the entrance of the saloon itself. The expression on their faces is ones of depression, emptiness and loneliness. The title of the poster “Daddy’s in there” has a very strong meaning which to me is that the father would rather spend his time in the saloon drinking rather than with his children.
The fact of using children in this poster to promote a message to the public has worked well in this poster. The wording under the poster is too very powerful.’ and our shoes and stocking and food are in the salons, and they ” ll never come out’. This shows us that because of the saloons and alcohol the children will have to go without things that they need to survive such as food. Also because of alcohol the father has forgotten his responsibilities and would rather waste his money on alcohol than his children’s well being. Both of the artists of these two posters are for prohibition. Even though that these two pictures come off very differently.
Both artists are trying to get the same message across but are just going about it in their own way. The artist who drew source C tried to get its message across by showing us two sides to the story. One was the man in the saloon spending the money and the other was the effect of it which was the wife sitting at home crying. A problem that you can have with this source it that you could dig into it to deep because there is so much going on. The source also uses a lot of devices such as metaphor, meanings and symbols. It could also show that how men spend their hard earned money in saloons and how it affects the family.
Source D on the other hand is a lot less detailed but gets the message across a lot easier. Source D simply shows how innocent children’s life is affected is the father drinks and spends most of their time in salons. From the picture you could only imagine that they are feeling neglected, empty, helpless and unloved. C-: Study Sources E and F. Which of these sources is more reliable evidence about Prohibition.

Both of the speeches are taken from a person’s speech. This makes them bias because they are only one persons opinion. I will review both speeches then decide which one is more reliable. Source E was taken form a letter, which was written in 1932 by John D Rockefeller Jr who was a wealthy industrialist. He was a highly educated man who studied at Brown University. Because he was a multimillionaire he was not affected by the great depression.
When this letter was written it was at the climax of the great depression. At the beginning of the letter he made the fact aware that he supported prohibition and hoped that many of the American people would be so supportive of it as well. As the letter progresses Rockefeller starts to realise that prohibition had began to fail even though he described alcohol as being “evil.” Henry Ford had similar ideas to Rockefeller because he refused for his staff to consume alcohol. He controlled this by using agent who would be sent to the homes of the workers to check up on them. In the letter it states that instead of the amount of alcohol being consumed decreasing it has generally increased. This in my opinion show that prohibition had fail before it had even began.
The letter also goes onto say that instead of the they anticipated the complete opposite happening. The fact that some of the best citizens had openly ignored Prohibition it not exactly a good sign. Many of the American people retaliated against prohibition and many of them started making their own alcohol, which was known as “moonshine.” What they did not know about it is that if it was made in the correct way it could end up to be very harmful. In many of the cities the prohibition act was completely ignored and this is proved by how many illegal bars were opened which where referred to as “speakeasies.”Crime has increased to a level never seen before.” When Rockefeller said that in his letter in my opinion he meant that the fact that so many people were cashing-in on prohibition meant that the crime rated had increased by a big difference. Rockefellers letter seems to be accurate of the event that happened due to the introduction of prohibition.
