I look to the University of Maryland as the next step in my academic journey. Over the last year, I have finally realized the importance of academic success in achieving my goals. This realization has made me a more mature individual, and I feel capable of handling the challenges of a rigorous academic career. As a high school student, I was unprepared to make a total commitment to my education. This changed, however, during my time at the University of Rhode Island. I achieved a G.P.A.
of 3.05 during my first semester, and am confident that this semester’s results will be even better. Taking such challenging classes as Philosophy 212,English 252,and economics, I developed advanced study habits as well as an appreciation for academic stimulation. In addition to my coursework, I joined the sorority Alpha Delta Pi, where I have had the opportunity to participate in several community service activities, including the Ronald McDonald House. The success of my first year instilled within me a drive to improve myself, prompting me to seek greater challenges and rewards; I am now ready for the path to academic excellence. I have become a very ambitious and hard-working student, and the University of Maryland is ideal for my needs. Visiting the campus revealed to me its many advantages. I observed classes, and found them to be of a higher caliber than those of the University of Rhode Island. The instructors were excellent and well prepared, and I look forward to working with them in the future.

I was also very comfortable with the student body; the people I met were friendly and interesting. Every aspect of the University of Maryland is remarkably superior to any school I have attended in the past. The University of Maryland is clearly the next peak on my climb toward academic success. It has the resources and facilities I need in order to further my growth as a student and a person. I feel within me a drive to increase my knowledge, and to expand my sense of the world around me. I therefore plan to take a variety of classes in a multitude of areas I have yet to explore.
The experiences of my first college year have whetted my appetite for education, and the University of Maryland will give me ample opportunity to fulfill my academic goals.
