It was the year 1994 when I was first introduced to a computer in school and 10 years later, i.e., 2004 I found myself pursuing Engineering program in the Aligarh Muslim University, with computer science as major.
And in those 10 years, I continued getting fascinated more and more by the extensive use of computer technologies in every walk of life.
The very first program I wrote in school was a simple BASIC one to calculate the factorial of a given number. Later on I was introduced to various high level programming languages like C, C++ and JAVA, in high school. My interest and inquisitiveness about computers and the science pertaining to the same did not seem to take a set back and that was when I decided to take Computer Science as a major in my Engineering course.
In my undergraduate studies, I was benefited from the breadth of Aligarh Muslim University’s (one of the finest Institute in the country) syllabi content that gave me a comprehensive exposure to the core areas of Computer Science and a strong conceptual understanding of the same. The course curriculum kept me extensively engaged in subjects such as Compiler designing, Networks (my personal favorite and area of research), Database management, Data Structures, Operating Systems, microprocessors, Computer Architecture, Computer Graphics and several other programming languages. One constant factor throughout my course of study was my interest in getting to the depth of every topic I studied.

Besides theoretical work, I gained practical knowledge in Computer Science through internships and various project works. The first project I undertook was the implementation of Client Server Model for enabling file transfer and instant messaging in LAN connected areas. The project was developed in JAVA. The interesting feature of this project was to facilitate constant communication availability with the server as well. While undergoing this project, I developed an indomitable interest in various types of Computer Networks architecture.
There were other projects also that made me recognize and implement Bluetooth technology as a transferring media, to transfer videos from cell phones to computer subsequently capturing the former on cell phones. In addition to my course work, I also underwent a four weeks vocational training for the Automation division of TATA STEEL (a TATA conglomerate) where I developed a project “Radio Planning and Survey systems” which helped in managing different frequencies for different departments .For final year project of engineering, I implemented a new mail server Architecture">mail architecture for college “SMTP server with automated mail response”. The objective of this project was to implement a mail server providing general mail facilities, with a special feature of customized automated response over LINUX.
With all the above mentioned experience and hands on, I successfully completed my Bachelors with a CPI of 7.25 on a scale of 10.I was offered a job with TATA CONSULTANCY SERVICES , right on campus and I found it a good opportunity to explore the width of usage of computer softwares in various industries. It was while working with the TATA giant, that I realized the importance of solution architecture and Database management. These experiences were invaluable for me since I learned the serviceability and functionality of various real world applications. With 2 years of working experience in hands and having traversed the breadth of computer science, I now wanted to dive deep into research areas and hence my opting for MS in Computer Science came out as more than obvious.

My ultimate goal in my career is to make a commendable contribution to the computing world either by starting an innovative venture or doing research which would change the dimensions of future computing and the way we perceive the computers. Now I have determined that a dedicated study on Computer Science will enable me to aggregate all my previous knowledge & experience on the field and encourage in achieving my career goal. I am confident that my academic records and practical knowledge combined with my eagerness to do research exhibit the perseverance and zeal required to pursue a Master’s Degree in your reputed university. After obtaining my M. S. degree in Computer Science, I plan to pursue Ph. D. studies. It would make me better suited to go in for research. Moreover, the technical challenges encountered in the graduate program will provide motivation and opportunity for methodological innovation. I am certain that application to Columbia is the best possible step to accomplish it and I would regard my admission not only as a great honor but also as a great responsibility and an obligation to work hard.
