1 to 1.5 million Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder. School communities have recently been mainstreaming students with mild disabilities into regular academic classes. Each person with Autism is unique and each has unique needs. This goes to say schooling and interacting with normal kids can be difficult for a child with Autism. In order to mainstream a child with Autism, they must meet the requirement of having a low functioning degree on the autism spectrum.
Children with Autism have the ability to perform in a classroom with normal students. There have been studies that show children at the elementary level of the Adaptive learning Environment Model with mild disabilities, or a lower degree of Autism in this case, functioned well in classrooms that are provided with structure and choice (Theodore Abramson, Lee Ann Truesdell, and Wang).
Every classroom has students from all different ranges. Most kids are on task with what their teachers assigned them during their day; others have a tendency to wonder off onto something different than what they are supposed to be doing. Yes, not being on task is a symptom for Autistic children, but teachers will tell anyone that a regular student with no disabilities can have the same problem. With education, you must give all students the patience they deserve. Both the groups of kids, autistic and normal, have about the same number of emotional interactions with the common teacher (Theodore Abramson, Lee Ann Truesdell, and Kaufman et al).

Children with Autism interrupt a class with regular students. Authors Theodore Abramson and Lee Ann Truesdell stated, “Students with emotional disturbances… exhibit inappropriate behavior or feelings, a persuasive unhappiness, or fears associated with personal or school problems (Theodore Abramson and Lee Ann Truesdell).” This is a huge problem for people with Autism. They often cannot control their reaction to something that could be so simple. So, for students on task and prepared for their day at school would get disrupted, by a child with autisms, outburst. Some may also include that it is unfair for the other students because the teacher has to comfort an autistic child with the outburst; therefore, the help they need would not fully be there. Then, if the help is not there, students may not be able to succeed that portion of the day.
Treatment of Autism has become widespread among school systems. Educating autistic children can be a challenge though. Autism is a developmental brain disorder that affects social and communication skills. Its symptoms vary widely, but people with autism generally can’t understand other people’s thoughts, so they aren’t able to respond appropriately to their environment and form relationships with other people. Many people with autism also have associated language delays and mental retardation, while others have average or above-average intelligence but the same communication problems. Time magazine stated that, “9 out of 19 autistic children taught for 40 hours a week with behaviorist methods had big jumps in IQ and were able to pass first grade (“A Tale of Two Schools”Time:49).” This was said to be one of the biggest hopes for Autism around the world. Though there are medications that help with some of the associated symptoms, the major treatment for autism is early and ongoing educational intervention. And that education, for the most part, is the responsibility of public school districts.
Treatment for Autism should not be a priority for public school systems. There are 90,000 people that suffer from Autism, but unfortunately there are only 7,500 places available in specialist schools (“A Tale of Two Schools” Time: 49).
Not every autistic student can cope in normal state schools, which should put pressure on states for creating private schools for people with more severe disabilities. Autism poses a challenge for schools because the disorder affects each person in different ways and to different degrees. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires all public schools in every state to provide free and appropriate education for school-age children with autism spectrum disorders like Asperger’s. Public schools must prepare a list of instruction goals or specific skills, known as the child’s Individualized Education Program, to develop a program based on each child’s needs. Most school districts cannot provide adequate specialized services because the state and federal budget simply will not cover the high costs.
It should be the teacher’s job to be able to handle a classroom of students with different abilities, and to grade them under the condition of their abilities. North Carolina’s state law requires classroom teachers to use different standards for grading mainstreamed students (Theodore Abramson, Lee Ann Truesdell; Calhoun & Beattie; Carpenter & Grantham).
The teachers call attention to their effort, attitude, and attendance for the children with disabilities. In regular classes, class teachers are responsible for education of all students. To protect their right education, class teachers have to meet all diversity of children’s individual needs. This demand also relates to students with special educational needs. Class teachers should be prepared for the task of working with different types of children through the academic course of their initial training.

Some teachers are under a lot of pressure having to control an Autistic kid, and then having the responsibility of teaching a classroom of regular students at the same time. Mainly, the goal of an autistic instructor aims towards ensuring that all students with disabilities have equal access to educational opportunities so they can participate, freely and actively, in all aspects of life. An article in the Economist stated, “Poorly trained teachers in mainstream schools are under huge strain (“A Cry for Help; Autistic Children) The Economist: 37).” It takes patience and compassion to create a disability-friendly environment. Teachers that have never had a mildly disabled kid would not be able to handle certain events that occur in the classroom involving the child. Autistic children in the classroom have difficulty understanding the intentions of others, they have trouble understanding the big picture. This for teachers would make it hard for them to explain how to accomplish certain work that normal students can pick up right away. Autistic kids have problems asking for help and transitions in their schedule can cause them difficulties. Even for parents of these children can make it a challenge to instruct them.
The issue of mainstreaming calls for a lot of thought and preparation. Autistic Children at a low functioning level should be mainstreamed. Children with Autism at a lower degree have the ability to achieve in a regular performing classroom. This is able to be accomplished by the treatment of Autism becoming widespread in schools around the United States. Teachers must be prepared for students of all different types to enter their classrooms, and receive the education they deserve.
