Technology had changed the face of combat in World War 1 and ultimately accounted for an unprecedented loss of human life. Infantry warfare had depended upon hand-to-hand combat. World War one introduced many new military weapons and also many old weapons found a new lease of life during this time. World War one popularized the use of the machine gun, capable of bringing down row after row of soldiers from a distance on the battlefield, along with barbed wire and mines movement across open land become difficult and very dangerous. Trench Warfare began in World War one. Introduction of tanks were in 1916 and were used with airplanes and artillery to advance on the front. Chemical warfare was also added to the soldier’s peril. Sea and airborne weapons made killing from a distance more effective as well, new guns were mounted on ships and they were able to strike up to twenty miles inland. The speed and stealth of German submarines gave Germany a considerable advantage in its dominance of the North Sea. Airplanes were technologically crude but they still offered a psychological advantage. World War one was the start of the change in military technology which was the reason for the winning of the war, the weapons from World War one were then developed increasingly and again used in World War two.
A new sword was made in the 1860’s; it was called the Cavalry Saber model 1860. It was used in the American Civil War and it was the superior choice when it came to close quarters combat. In 1836 the first revolving pistol was made, it was called The Colt Revolver. It became a very popular weapon in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War in 1860. It is said to have revolutionized the battlefield, it was so easy to use it replaced swords and muskets. The Gatling gun was invented in 1861 but by 1876 it had developed and could fire 1,200 rounds per minute, it was used in the Spanish-American War and helped American win many battles. In the 19th century this was replaced by the M1895 Colt-Browning which was lighter, more accurate and easier to operate.
The Essay on The importance of this particular war in American history
1. The most important historical event that occurred between 1492 and 1865 was the American Civil War. Sparked by issues such as states’ rights and the many aspects of slavery, it was a four-year war in which the country split in two and fought against each other for principles each side strongly believed in. The importance of this particular war in American history cannot be emphasized enough. ...
The mortar was yet another old weapon which found a new lease of life during World War One. The good thing about the mortar was that it could be fired from the (relative) safety of the trench, avoiding exposure of the mortar crews to the enemy. The first German mortar had been designed in 1908-09, they were quickly put into mass production after witnessing their results in satisfaction. In January 1915 the man that designed the British mortar had ‘saved the day’ as he had designed a mortar of brilliant simplicity. It was simple but highly effective and it could fire as many as 22bombs per minute. By the end of the war both sides had a full range of mortar bombs, each with roughly the same effect and all very dangerous.
In the 1850’s the Prussians refined warfare further. They increased their railways, changing them to double-tracking lines, adding large platforms and sidings and building dual-use carriages that could be rapidly changed from passenger wagons to troop, horse and even artillery carriers. Prussia was ready to attack and strike faster than any other Great Power.
Explosives such as TNT and Dynamite were invented during the 19th century. These played a major role in destroying railroads and mining industries. In the mid to late 1800s they were used to destroy enemy buildings and camps but they were not used a lot.
The Zeppelin was used in the First World War by the Germans; they used to carry bombs and machine guns. Its purpose was the bombing raids in its enemy countries. They were not very successful as they were easily shot out of the sky.
The first self-powered machine gun was invented in 1885. It was called The Maxim Machine-Gun and it was adopted by the British Army in 1889. The following year the Austrian, German, Italian, Swiss and Russian armies also purchased Maxim’s gun. The gun was first used by Britain`s colonial forces in the Matabele war in 1893-94. At one time, fifty soldiers fought off 5,000 Matabele warriors with just four Maxim Machine-guns. The machine gun in 1914 was said to have dominated and personify the battlefields of World War One. There were many problems with the machine guns though and in the 1900s the British army high command could see no real use for the machine gun, it was regarded as an improper form of warfare. By the beginning of the First World War, the German army had produced their own version of Maxim’s invention, and they were used in large quantities. The machine guns used in 1914 by the Germans had some good points and bad points; they were very strong but took a long time to reload. It could fire 400 to 600 rounds per minute and at the Battle of Sommes it helped the Germans win by killing up to 60,000 British men. In World War Two the machine guns were deadly, they had become more reliable but the basics had remained the same. The machine guns had changed the way wars were fought.
The Essay on The Civil War Gun Arms Artillery
Weapons in the American Civil War The American Civil War is known to be one of the bloodiest wars in history. Significant advances in weapon technology contributed to the unprecedented carnage. All types of weapons were being invented including side arms, shoulder arms, and artillery. Surveying the origins and design of only a portion demonstrates fire power had outstripped battlefield tactics by ...
The first tank was built in July 1915 and it was called “Little Willie”, shortly after construction it saw combat action. It was highly unreliable but was used to end the horrors of trench warfare. It was never designed to fight but to serve as a template for development. “Little Willie” was then developed into “Big Willie” they were also not very reliable but they were better than the first tank. The only problem with “Big Willie” was the track system; they could not cope with hard lunar landscapes.
Q-ships were first introduced in 1914 by the British and the French; they were also deployed by the Italian and Russians navies later on. They were used to trap the enemies’ submarines. The Q-ships were very successful during the war for the British and French and resulted in the sinking of 11 enemy U-boats. However, the Germans quickly caught on and used torpedoes to sink the Q-ships. So by the end of 1917 the Q-ships did not developed anymore and were not counted as successful.
The submarines were first useful in the 19th century. They were used in the Civil War but it wasn’t until WW1 that they were invented to be more modern and practical for warfare. Germany’s submarines were called U-boats, the first U-boat was the U-27 in 1936 but they were not very helpful. In 1939 they developed the U-boat and called it VII B, it had much better engine power and greater fuel carrying capacity. This was then developed into The Type VII C, the major drawback of this U-boat was that it was not very far as it did not have much fuel carrying capacity, so this U-boat was used to repair at sea. There were many different types of U-boats in WW2 and they were very efficient, they showed how vulnerable ships were against a submarine. Many aircrafts and ships were sunk because of these U-boats. The U-boats sailed together for security and protection; this was called the convoy system. The U-boats/submarines used torpedoes to blow up ships. The Germans used them to blow up ships carrying supplies to Britain from America. They torpedoed an American ship causing many deaths which is the reason the Americans joined the war against Germany. The very first Sonar type listening device was invented in 1906, as a way of detecting icebergs. Interest in Sonar was increased during World War I when there was a need to be able to detect submarines. It is a transmitter-receiver sending out highly directional sound wave through water, if the sound wave struck a submerged object it was reflected back and picked up by the receiver. Sonar didn’t affect the outcome of World War I. Sonar and electronics technology were not far enough advanced to make a difference in the era from 1910 to 1920. Certainly the war spurred the efforts to develop sonar, but it didn’t come far enough fast enough to have any significant effect on WWI at all.
The Essay on Australia And War Wars World Soldiers
Name: Frank Trimboli Teacher: Ms Meyers Date: 23/3/98 Should Australia involve itself in wars which do not directly affect its security? Australia has involved itself in four wars where it has suffered substantial life loss and casualty. Those wars included World War 1, World War 2, the Korean War and Vietnam. The first recorded powered-flight was in 1903. At the start of World War One, aircrafts were very basic. By the end of World War One the aircraft had developed to hold fighters, bombers and long-range bombers. The aircraft was developed to be able to help fight and win the war. They were first used for feeding back artillery strikes and recording German troop’s movement. By 1918 the aircraft was not only used for aerial photographs but also for fighting. In just four years the changes brought on by war were huge. Aircrafts were later used for bombings and fighting. At first the aiming was crude in the extreme; the pilot simply dropped the bomb over the side of the aircraft in the general direction of the target. If a bomb dropped anywhere near a target it was through good luck. Bombsights before World War 2 were just viewing scopes with crosshairs to aim, when the technology advanced the sights could be more accurate as they had the capability to process aerial information, they could correct the altitude, airspeed, wind speed and the aerodynamic properties of the bomb being dropped.

RADAR (Radio Detecting and Ranging) came of age during World War 2 it is said to have been the weapon that won the war and the invention that changed the world. Radar allowed land bases to sense incoming aircrafts. It was also used in an offensive strategy by giving aircraft the ability to attack targets at night and during bad weather. There are two different types of Radar. Fire Control Radar was a great advantage for pilots because they could attack at night with accuracy and depart the area with ought being detected. Detection Radar was also an advantage as it was used to create an electronic map of all objects in all directions and at a great distance. Radar nowadays are used for many different reasons such as, navigation, targeting, air traffic control and weather tracking. Britain’s use of radar allowed them to defend themselves against Germany, with ought the warning from radar the damage Germany caused Britain could have been a lot worse.
Germans were the first to use poison gas on 22nd April 1915, it was said to be the most awful form of scientific torture. Yet Britain retaliated with poison gas of its own. Germany claimed that the Allies were already using mines charger with poison gas. Chemical warfare was then banned for future wars until 1925. The use of chemicals led to more deadly weaponry being available to a soldier, the most famous being the phosphorous grenade and the use of napalm. Phosphorous grenades had a sole intention of setting things alight. In ground combat, an infantryman could use a phosphorous grenade to attack a machine gun post. In an aerial attack, bombers could use phosphorous bombs to set buildings alight. A phosphorus grenade causes a very painful skin burn which ends up in taking someone out of a combat zone. In World War two there was also the development of the napalm which burnt fiercely for long periods of time. In World War two, napalm was used against soldiers in trenches. Both napalm and phosphorous were used in World War Two, but poison gas, though it was developed and researched in depth, was not used.
The Term Paper on Free Trade War World Policies
The principle of free trade is non-interference, This was written by the English classical economist, Nassau Senior in 1828. It is to suffer every man to employ his industry in the manner which he thinks most advantageous, without a pretence on the part of the legislator to control or direct his operations. This report aims to explain the meaning of free trade and why such a system is beneficiary ...
