Journal – Enders ShadowEntry 1
In this story there is an alien race called the buggers, they have attacked earth before and now the I.F. (International Fleet) is training the younger generation to be commanders of the next fleet.
The main character in Enders Shadow is Bean. He lives on the streets of Rotterdam, in the allies and under steps. Like many other children living on the streets, it is very sparse to find food. Most survive by the leftovers they find in the trash. Bean, being the smallest of the children was the skinniest of them all. He was extremely small. He was on his last few days of life and was so weak he gave up on finding food. That very day a crew leader named Poke (crews were a group of children that shared the food that they found and they had crew leaders) gave Bean 7 peanuts and she asked for his name. But he said he hadn’t received a name, so they called him Bean. There were food shelters that gave food out every morning but crews with young children couldn’t get in because of the older children that were bullies. And most of the time bullies would come and take food from the crews instead of beating them up. Bean had a plan to threaten one bully to protect the crew and In return he would be allowed to live. They choose to pick the bully named Achilles because he was born with a bad leg and he needed the crew for his safety. They jumped Achilles and held a rock over his head and told him their plan and he agreed to go along with it but Bean told Poke to kill him as and example to the other bullies, but Achilles was smart and he persuaded them to let him be there protector.

Entry 2
Achilles made a plan to get the children into the kitchens. When the bullies started lining up for the kitchen Achilles sent one of the crewmembers named Sergeant to the second place in the line budding in front of the meanest bully. The bully shoved the kid into the ground. Achilles came up to the bully and asked him why he pushed Sergeant into the bully in the front. Achilles explained how he was just saving his place in line, until he pushed him into his friend. Few more of the crewmembers snuck up on the target and started jumping at his calves just as Achilles shoved him hard. The target hit the ground hard and didn’t get up. The rest of the crew filled the gap in line and started going into the kitchen. The supervisor of the kitchen watched as this happened; she was also a recruiter for the I.F. Achilles explained how all-young children would now eat first. Achilles did not eat but all the children gave him halve their bread him. They started calling him papa.
Entry 3
The next day, sister Carlotta the recruiter for the I.F. visited the crew and gave them all a lesson on reading. This continued for a few days, until one day she came with a test. Bean went through the test and him and Achilles being the only ones who could read did the test easily.
Bean still didn’t trust Achilles but he went along with his decisions. A few weeks pasted and one night Bean was lying in a crawl space between 2 buildings when he seen Poke walking in the street. Bean followed her and hid in an ally when she seen Poke meet Achilles near the docks. Bean knew Achilles was smart and that he could hold a grudge for a long time so he ran away. And in a few minutes he realized that Achilles was going to kill Poke. Bean ran back to the docks only to find Pokes dead body in the water.

Sister Carlotta had spoken with general Graff and after looking at Beans test scores he told her to keep Bean till he was 5, Then he would be old enough. And Achilles also scored well on the tests but Bean had already told Sister Carlotta that he thinks Achilles murdered Poke; so Achilles may not go to battle school. Bean lived with Sister Carlotta for 1 year being fed well and learning by doing schoolwork. Sister Carlotta found out that Bean was able to remember that he was born with many other children in an organ farm but he sensed the danger and he started crawling. Although he was only 5 months old he was able to climb into a toilet tank and hide there. Then a janitor found him one night and took him home but was forced to give him up for adoption.

After a year had pasted with Sister Carlotta a limo had picked Bean up from the building he was staying at. He had not eaten in a day because of launch regulations. He arrived at the shuttle that was taking Bean to battle school in a station in space. Most of the other smart children were complaining about there hunger, but Bean was used to it. The shuttle took off, and soon after General Dimak entered. He explained where they were going. One boy was bragging about being better than the rest when Dimak said that they were all the same intelligence. The boy argued and said there is one child who is smarter than the rest. Dimak said that Bean was the smartest and singled him out.

When Bean arrived at battle school he was shown around by one of the teachers. They explained how they would be in regular classes and that they would be going to the gym every day. They wore suits that Bean soon figured out that they had tracking systems in and the teachers could tell where each student was. Dimak showed them were the lunchroom was and they ate, but Bean was given too much so he trough most of it away. He was finished eating before most people were half done. Dimak explained how they could palm the wall and lights on the wall would show them back to there barracks. Bean had and instinct that told him to explore. He wandered around until he found himself in front of a game room. He noticed the air duct system and he followed it into the intake vent in the wall. He pulled off the cover and climbed inside. He was the only person small enough to fit in the vent. He didn’t know why he was trying to get into the vent but he might need it later on. He went back to the barracks where Dimak was waiting. He assigned people their bunks and lockers. In each locker there was a desk (computer) that had a fantasy game on it. The fantasy game adopts your interests and reads your mind. But Bean figured this out and decided not to play. Bean had also found emergency maps of the station and he found out how many decks their where and that there were three wheels spinning simultaneously.

After time Bean had realized that battle school was base upon the armies and the rankings of these armies. And there were standings of each student. And on top of the standings was Ender Wiggin. People referred to Bean as being the new Ender because they both entered battle school at a young age. Bean had been doing perfect scores on all his tests while only reading the material once. But he had not made any friends; he only asked questions for answers he needed. He also hadn’t played the fantasy game, and that’s how the teachers analyse the students. Bean had thought of a theory of that earth is attacking the buggers and that the I.F. is preparing to the younger generation for war just so earth will be in peace within the countries. One day Bean gave away all his food and went back to the barracks. But he slid under an empty bunk and pulled a vent cover off it. He stood back up and continued with his usual activities. That night, when most were sleeping, Bean snuck into the venting system and started shimmering down the vent. He had studied the map of the station and he knew where he was going. He had gone to a teacher’s barracks where he could see the computer screen. He watched as a teacher logged on. He had gotten the password. He crawled back to his barracks where he could rest up for the remaining of the night.

Bean now entered on as the teacher and he looked though the student’s files. The tests that were taken on earth just showed what the students were capable of. Most of the scores were between 97 and 98 percent while Ender Wiggin was 98.5 and Bean was 99. Bean had now analyzed all the students in battle school, and he knew which of them were going to come out on top. Dimak had known that Bean was using the student data and he asked Bean to make an army out of launches that haven’t been assigned to an army yet. He could also use players that are on the trading roster. Bean constructed an army that would dominate the battle room. The next day Bean had his orders to go to Dragon army barracks.

Dragon army’s colours were grey-orange-grey. And their commander was the all mighty Ender Wiggin. Ender made it clear that all the spare classes the army had would be training in the battle room. He taught them how to spring off the walls and to shoot will in mid-flight. He learnt that when you’re hit, you become frozen like stone. He selected 5 toon leaders instead of the regular 4. Each toon had 8 members; Bean was in Crazy Tom’s toon C. Three weeks of training and practicing Ender received his first slip under the door; it was Dragon’s first battle. They were facing rabbit army. The gates opened to the battle room, and C toon headed out first, they went down the far sidewall while the other toons went strait down. The main toons battled in the centre part of the battle room. Till Crazy Tom seen a second group approaching from the enemy’s gate. C toon snuck behind them and froze all the Rabbit army members. Five members passed through the enemy’s gate and the battle was over. Dragon army continued to win game after game, but the teachers started giving the other teams advantages. One game the opposing team would unfreeze after 4 minutes. One afternoon after Dragon army had already played a game when Ender told them to suit up.
They had to hurry because Salamander army had been notified 10 minutes before Dragon. When they arrived at gate, they were already 5 minutes late. But the battle room looked empty. Ender pointed around the edge of the gate notifying it was an ambush. They paired up the solders and froze the bigger of the two while in a kneeling position. Then the smaller solder would kneel on the back of their legs. The pairs were thrown out backward where they shot all the Salamanders. After one day at practice Dragon army was walking down the corridor to there barrack when Bean realized that there were a lot of Salamander solders. Bean told Crazy Tome and Fly Molo to head to the back of the line to cover Ender. Bonzo Madrid was Enders original commander but he didn’t let Ender play or join the practices. He was traded to a different team were he became the best-ranked solder. Bonzo had been mad ever since. Bean knocked on Rabbit armies barrack and said, “They’re making a move on Ender.” The solders poured out of the barracks and safely escorted Ender to his room.

Ender had learnt to trust Bean and he knew that Bean thought faster than everyone. He gave Bean a special squad that would help ender when he had no idea how to win. Ender had become sick of the teachers and how they changed the rules to beat Dragon. The next morning Ender received another battle slip. But this game was against 2 armies. They arrived at the gate to find a big block jut outside the gateway. They could not see into the battle room. But Ender told Bean to find out what the enemy is doing. Bean used a wire that he found in the stations storage to swing around the block and then ending up back at his gate. He told Ender were they were. They were peeking around the block and shooting. Ender told Bean to take command, and said, “The enemy’s gate is always open.” Bean assembled all the toons together on the block and locked them together to make a net. Then Beans toon made up the middle of the net holding the 4 toons together. They slowly moved around the block and towards the enemy’s block. As they arrived at the enemy’s block they separated and all 4 toons going to the four corners of the battle room. While Beans toon drifter up and over the enemy, and they held very still pretending to be frozen. There plan had worked, the enemy payed no attention to Beans toon. Bean pushed Crazy Tom through the enemy’s gate and the battle room light came on.

After the battle Ender went to the commanders mess and ate. Then he went to the washrooms. While his solders left their mess hall they couldn’t find ender. Bean knew where he might be and when he got there it was too late. The washroom was filled with blood and Bean seen ender walking out with a towel around his back. He had blood dripping from his head, but Bean realized that it was not his blood. Then he saw Bonzo being carried out of the washroom on a stretcher. Bean knew he was dead. That very day Ender got a transfer form to go directly to Command School. Bean and all the toon leaders for Dragon got transfer slips to command their own armies. Bean was assigned to Rabbit army. He went to Ender and said a brief goodbye, and then he left. When been was introduced to his army he found that Achilles was accepted to battle school and he was in Rabbit. But Bean had better things to do than to worry about Achilles. Bean trained his army hard and taught them things that he learnt in Dragon. Bean learnt from Rabbit things that he would have never though of. Rabbit lost its first eight battles but Bean didn’t seem to care because both him and his army were learning tactics they have never used. Bean set a trap for Achilles in the air vents where Crazy Tom helped him record Achilles confess to all his murders. Achilles was sent home and to a physiological clinic. The next day Bean received another transfer slip. He was going to tactical school. He had his short goodbye with his army and then talked to Nikolai. Nikolai was getting Rabbit army. They said goodbye and Bean left for earth. After getting to earth he realized how there was a team being assembled. Crazy Tom, Fly Molo, Dink, Petra, and others that got along well with both Ender and Bean. Bean read up on how the world was evolving.

The team was learning about how the weapons on ships were used and how they could be used. They were also learning about older ships, and that puzzled most of the children. Why learn about a ship that isn’t going to be used. After 3 months in Tactical school they were sent off on a 4-month trip to Command school. On the trip they studied how to control fleets of ships. When they finally arrived at command school they noticed that the roofs were only 2 meters tall. Bean could tell that this was the buggers attack base in the first attack. General Graft had been assigned to teach the team how to use the simulators. On the simulators they each had a fleet of ships that they could control. The team still hadn’t been united with Ender so Bean was practicing as the commander of the others. Till one day they had their headsets on when they heard Enders voice. They chatted for a while and Ender explained how he had a teacher; his name was Mazer Rackham. Ender explained a new weapon called Dr.Device that was a chain link attack that could be used with lots of mass in one area. They were told that Mazer was playing against them for these tests they had. But Bean had a theory that they were actually commanding real fights on every different planet.
Graft had a talk with Bean about him knowing too much, but Bean refused to say that he knew these were real fights. Bean told him that he would never tell the others of whatever he knew. Day after day the team had been getting more and more tiered of battle after battle. One battle Petra fell asleep and Bean notified ender that her ships were not moving. Bean watched every move that everyone made. Graft had another talk with Bean about how ender was getting tiered of the game and the pressure of Mazer. Graft told him that he might have to take over command if ender failed to play successfully. One day Mazer had news; they were having a final test. To Bean that meant the attack on the home world of the buggers. As the screen on the simulator turned on they seen hundreds of thousands of bugger vessels flying in and out of the screen area. Ender stalled for minutes just looking at the swarm of buggers. But they weren’t close enough to each other so Dr.Device would not work. Graft gave the signal to Bean, but Bean didn’t take command. Instead he said to Ender “the enemy’s gate is always open.” Ender had an idea. He slowly moved all the vessels right above the bugger’s planet. Then all but Petra’s vessels dropped down to the planet. The planet would be a large enough mass to use Dr.Device. As one by one the teams vessels were destroyed only to have one left. It was Beans vessel and he set off Dr.Device in his own vessel and it plummeted towards the planet. The screen showed a marvellous display of the planet bubbling until it exploded, killing all the buggers. Bean explained to the others how this was the real war, and now it’s all over. They could go home.
