HPV- Vaccination
Gardasil, a vaccine that protects against HPV (human papillomavirus), has
become a very common word in Canada since it was approved in 2006. “In 2006, the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first preventive HPV vaccine,
marketed by Merck & Co. under the trade name Gardasil. According to a Merck press
release, in the second quarter of 2007, it had been approved in 80 countries.” (Gilbert,
2009) It should be mandatory for all women to get this vaccine due to the social
conditions that can be improved due to the heath benefits of the HPV shot; they can
also improve our economy due to the people then saving money on health care that
occur out of the treatments of cervical cancer and even with all the potential benefits of
the HPV shot; it will benefit the government and the laws and politics of various
countries. The HPV shot can be a great source of positive change for Canada and the
World and because of this they should receive more funding and support.

Human Papillomavirus Common Name-HPV There are about 6 million new cases of genital HPV* in the United States each year. It’s estimated that 74% of them occur in 15-24 year olds. going to be one less” are quite ordinary, and now the vaccine, which protects against
the four types of HPV that potentially can lead to cervical cancers and genital warts, is
being recommended for girls ages 9 to 26. “Both Gardisal and Cervarix protect against
infection with two high-risk types of HPV (16 and 18) and two low risk types (6 and 11).
HPV types 16 and 18 cause approximately 70% of cervical cancers and HPV types 6
and 11 cause approximately 90% of genital warts.” (Allen, 2008) This Vaccine only
protects against the HPV types listed above, it does not protect against any of the other
-1-
low or high risks of HPV. The vaccine does not have any use to an existing HPV
infection, such as genital warts. This is important to know because there is no cure yet
for HPV infections, so no treatments are available. “At least 80% of Canadian women
will have contracted at least one strain of HPV by 50 and about 1,300 women are
diagnosed with cervical cancer each year and about 380 of them die.” (Brown, 2009)
Most people who have contracted a HPV do not know they have it because they
show no symptoms. Women can only become aware that they have an HPV infection if
either they conceive genital herpes or when they go for there annual physical every
year and get back the results from there Pap smear test, and they come back abnormal.
The best way to make sure you do not get infected or if you do, you have a better
chance because you caught it as early as possible, is to make sure you schedule a
yearly check up and if you feel concerned about something that seems irregular to then
make an appointment with your doctor. Although if you are not sexually active a Pap
smear test is not required until the age of 21. It checks for changes in the cells of your
cervix which hen can tell you if you have gotten cervical cancer. A Pap test can save
your life. It can find the earliest signs of cervical caner. (Weinstock, 2008) If women
take the shot they can then feel more confident in themselves, and feel like they are one

less. Mothers shouldn’t be afraid that if there young daughters get the shot that they
then have to talk to them about safe sex, it could be just another shot that they get in
there life. Another way of making sure that you don’t pick up an HPV infection is to be
safe by using a condom during sexual activity which includes oral, anal and vaginal sex.
This will decrease the chances that you will get an HPV or pass it on to your
partner. Also condoms can only protect the area which is covered, so it may be possible

to become infected by any uncovered warts. (Montoya, 2008).If you care enough about
your body, your well being and the future of yourself you would consider getting
vaccinated, you would be considered “one less” and that’s one less problem to worry
about in life.
It should become a mandatory law for all girls ages 9 to 26 to get the HPV
vaccination. Especially for the girls that are still young and in elementary school where
the shot is being given out free; it should be an obligatory to get it. If the government put
a law out in the world that made it mandatory for all girls to get vaccinated then there
would be less painful and costly treatments for cervical cancer. The vaccine also
protects you from different types of more rare cancers including cancers in; the cervix,
vulva, vagina and anus. Gardasil requires three doses to be given over the course of six
months (0, 2, 6 months).
(Shobha, 2007).
As of September 2009 (2009 -09-01)[update] there have been more
than 26 million doses distributed in Canada, and there have been 15,037 Vaccine
reports following the vaccination. Ninety-three percent were reports of events
considered to be non-serious (example, fainting, pain and swelling at the injection site
(arm), headache, nausea and fever), and seven percent were considered to be serious
(death, permanent disability, life-threatening illness and hospitalization).
The vaccine
does not contain any antibiotics or preservatives, including mercury or thimerosal.

These chemicals are very bad for the human body, but the shot does not contain them.
(Pollit, 2009) These are not high risks and the more extreme side effects are only 7%
possible. The side effects are not severe and fear of these side effects should not
prevent girls from getting the vaccine. People would rather be safe then sorry. Cancer is
a costly treatment; it takes a lot of money and time. Cervical cancer depends on your
-3-
age, on the stage of your cancer, and how the screening and treatment goes.
Everyone’s body is different, people react to things differently then others.
Including screening, all utilities uses, treatment and everything needed for the cancer,
there are then two approximate prices. If you catch the cancer at an early stage the
treatment isn’t as much it costs approximately $20,255 and for a later stage it costs
approximately $36,912. (Jones, 2009) Then time wise, going into the hospital every
week for treatments and regular screening plus the amount of gas you use every time.
There is a lot of money, time and patience put into this, sometimes more then people
have time for. A lot of people cannot take the time off of work if they have a family to
provide for, usually your job only can pay for part of the time when you are off, but
usually not for a long time. So then why put your family in that position? The HPV
vaccine is currently being offered for approximately $120.00 per single dose. Three
shots are required over a 6- month period, making the total cost for the vaccine shot
around $360.00. (Wallis, 2008) So why not spend $360.00 rather then thousands of
dollars on cancer treatments? People still have a choice, but if there was a law made it
would benefit the world more, and people that were against getting the shot would end
up happy in the end because they were protected. There is law that everyone needs to
get the Hepatitis B shot that protects us from all the viruses that have to do with it. So
what’s wrong with getting another shot that does the same thing as the Hepatitis shot

it protects us. Even if girls are not sexually active at the age of 9 they should still get the
shot. It’s better to get it before they are sexually active than them getting it after the fact.
It works more effectively when you get the shot before hand, because then the body
doesn’t know about the types of viruses out there so it can then protect itself, so if it did

come the body would be ready to fight the disease off. It does not work as well for those
who were exposed to the virus before getting the vaccine.
Sexually active women benefit as well because they will be protected against
other strains of the virus. Having your daughter vaccinated against HPV doesn’t mean
that you have to talk to your daughter about sex if you are not ready. “There are over a
100 different types of HPV strains, why not take the chance of having a healthier and
safer life.” (Weinstock, 2008) If the government makes getting the HPV shot mandatory
they will be saving a tone of money and better yet women and girls will be protected,
theirs nothing to be scared of there is a really good chance that you will be “one less”.
If the government stepped in he could prevent future strains on the heath care
system. The government is already producing commercials on Gardisal and Cervarix
that show the risks of not taking the shot and why girls should have the shot. They are
also having free shots given to all grade 8 girls in school, which is great because it gets
the message across. Rather than paying $360.00 for three shots they are getting it for
free, so why not take the advantage of getting it earlier then later and have to pay for it.
There is also a website on it for young teens to watch and learn facts about cervical
cancer and other HPV infections. It is a very informative sight there is a question and
answer section, quiz’s, has a commercial for younger girls so that they can understand
what it protects you from and that its not bad to get. This is great because the girls get a
chance to see what the shot does and they can then understand it in a way that benefits

Great strides have been made in recent years in the development of a vaccine to treat the cervical cancer. then spending the time in the hospital being treated for cervical cancer. Cervical cancer
is characterized by an abnormal growth of nasty cells in the cervix. It is the second most
common cancer in females and occurs generally between 40 and 55 years of age.
(Serling, 2009) It can be successfully cured if detected in the early stage, but why take
that chance. The thought of having to go to a hospital every week for chemotherapy and
be sick for a long time and not be able to do the things you usually do, why risk that. If
the government starts to put up posters and billboards on the streets where it can be
seen, and maybe start to have some guest speakers start to come into school and talk
to the young kids about it, people will be more aware of the issue. The government
should send a representative, a person that has HPV and they can tell there story to the
school, not so the girls will get scared but so they can become aware, and maybe feel
better about getting vaccinated.
In conclusion it should be mandatory for all women to get this vaccine due to the
social conditions that can be improved due to the heath benefits of the HPV shot; they
can also improve our economy due to the people then saving money on health care that
occur out of the treatments of cervical cancer and even with all the potential benefits of
