To some students high school is nothing but a race to find themselves in a population amongst hundreds. I truly don’t believe half of those people “really” find themselves. For me, I was never in a rush to fit in. Sure, I tried my array of sports and clubs that I thought were fun at the time, but ended of dropping them for they really weren’t me. The one true love I possessed was music, and I finally found myself within the instruments I play.
I admit I was horrible when I started, but like the little engine that could, I never gave up. I enrolled in various music classes to enrich my music experience. Drumstick after broken drumstick, I stuck with it. I refused to let my love for percussion break, unlike the growing pile of broken sticks in the “Drumstick Graveyard” (as us percussionists called it.) I’ll never forget the look on my music teachers face, Mr. Cevallos, whenever I did something incredibly wrong. Likewise, I’ll never forget the looks he gave me once I got strong, and played to my true potential. I owe most of what I know to Mr. Cevallos, for he pushed me further than what I wanted to play, he pushed me even on those days I just wanted a break. Because of that I learned how to not give up, because at one point all of us were beginners, we don’t get better by merely staring at the drum. Once you truly know your talent, your drum, and yourself, the drum will do much more than make noise, it will sing to you.
To me, music is much more than a few minutes of instruments combining together to make a song. Music is so much more than that. The type of music you like reflects on your life, your interests, maybe even your beliefs. Music is forever changing, every beat is as unpredictable as the next. Life is much like any of the songs you hear on the radio. Sometimes the song is slow, mellow and comforting. That part of the song is just like the point in your life where you are content with who you are. Some parts of a song may be incredibly fast and dramatic, like the points of your life where you don’t know if you are up or down. Music is life, and life is music.

The past four years of me being a part of percussion has been more than a way to express what I like in music, it’s been a learning experience. I have developed some incredible friendships within the percussionists in my school. We may not talk everyday on the phone, we may not see each other outside of school, we might not even talk at all. But when we play a song and it’s just the 5 of us, the energy is intensified in us and we all feel it, each of us knows exactly how the other feels. I may be the quiet drummer, my friend Ty might be the dramatic drummer. Danny is the one that loves to improvise and creates incredible stuff, and Steven and Austin, the new drummers, are learning from us everyday. All together we are a group, we are a family. Love is shown in so many ways, through words, writing, thoughts, but for us, it’s music.
I know I found myself through my music, and I know that no matter what I will always have music. I can be rich, poor, sad, or the happiest person in the world, no one can deny me of my music. I may end up being a rich musician playing at some of the countries greatest symphonies, or I may be an average person that just plays the drums for fun. Music has found me, and in that, I’ve found myself.
