The Stolen Generation, as how it’s implied by the name, is to describe those Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forced to remove from their families by the governments and the church services without the parental consent and without a court order from the late 18 century to 1969. The saying of “Stealing the children from their parents” here will not be considered out of place.
Those indigenous Australian children, who were removed from their families and forced to assimilate into white Australian society , have been hoped to breed out the Aboriginal race out o existence and adopt western culture and behaviour so that eventually there will be no more indigenous people left. However, when the entire generation of children was removed from the traditional background, they have lost their language ability , culture even self-esteem and impacted on contemporary Aboriginal spiritualities simultaneously. The ability of those children to maintain the cultural identities has destructively affected due to the separation from tribal elders and prohibitions from using their traditional language. “Their removal from their traditional lands meant and still means that they cannot learn or fulfil their ritual responsibilities – ultimately to deny Indigenous Australians access to their land is to cut their ties with the Dreaming as the Dreaming inextricably connected to the land.” (Kiwianswer,2010) Their removal from their traditional lands meant and still means that they cannot learn or fulfil their ritual responsibilities – ultimately to deny Indigenous Australians access to their land is to cut their ties with the Dreaming as the Dreaming is inextricably connected to the land.

Undeniably, the stolen generation has continued to impact on those Aboriginal communities. The actions of the Australian government were believed to be rescuing those children but have had devastating affects to the indigenous population. Those Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander who were removed from the indigenuous Australian communities to the white families did not find out about their background until late in their lives have found that it is an another painful start marring by the feeling of cultural alienation because of the estrangement of their new families. Unfortunately that means the children had lost years of love, care and education about their own indigenous heritage for example the land and the traditional customs. “A lot of people say that they don’t know what exactly they are, whether they’re white or they’re black. Where exactly they belong.” Jane McKendrick(1997) states.
Indigenous Australians’ health status has become a serious issue in Australia society. Many of the stolen generations suffered from sexual and physical in those cruel institutions and homes which they were placed. At the first place, the view was that indigenous Australians lived in the poor conditions, and the church services and white families would provide a positive environment for those indigenous people to better themselves. However, some of those children who were taken into the modern Australian society were not well educated because they were expected to be the labourers in general, this has strongly affect the stolen generations’ mental health. Also, Indigenous communities suffer from a range of health problem associated with substance abuse of both illegal and legal drugs. Australian Institute of Health and Welfare state that “More likely than other Australians to abstain from alcohol consumption (23.4% versus 16.8%) and also more likely to consume alcohol at risky or high-risk levels for harm in the short term (27.4% versus 20.1%)”(Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2009, p.1), that’s the major factor of poor health status of those Indigenous Australian.

Members of the Lost Generation has been living a very bohemian lifestyle. One withness(1997) of the commission stated that “I’ve got everything that could be reasonably expected: a good home environment, education, stuff like that, but that’s all material stuff. It’s all the non-material stuff that I didn’t have the lineage. You know, you’ve just come out of nowhere, there you are”(p.26).
They have challenged different attitudes about the white society’s appropriate behavior. Many of them still feel contempt when it came to morality especially sexuality as they stuggled with their disillusion.
