The Inequalities of marriage
The role of a woman was limitless and always goes unnoticed. A woman’s role begins with being a wife, a mother, the primary care giver, a mentor and an organizer. Also a woman was expected to be understanding and humane in the face of all adversities. Women have never been seen as equals to their male counterparts despite their active role in a marriage.
The theme of marriage is common in stories, ‘Sweat and The story of an Hour’. In Sweat Marriage is seen as a conventional marriage, a Husband and a Wife living under the same roof working together. As the story develops the traditional setting of marriage disappears and a bizarre or queer presentation of marriage comes forth. In the story sweat the characters Sykes and Delia are married but rather than Sykes the man being the provider for his family, you will see the role of bread winner changed, despite Delia being the bread winner she still has a lot of respect and love for her husband. On the other hand Sykes is not appreciative nor does he have any respect and care for his wife, who loves his despite her plight. Marriage is said to be safe and sacred, however in sweat the marriage is showed as being very unequal. A woman place was in the home as primary care giver; however the husband; in whom the wife was to be consoled by was having an open affair for all to see, taking his wife’s hard working money and spending it on another woman boldly. Delia being a woman trapped by the rules and expectation of society, devotionally carries out her role as a woman and a wife as stated in her vows by remaining faithful and respectful to her husband. In the story “Sweat” Delia demonstrates the acceptance the role and expectations of society by working for the ‘whites’ despite the legacy of slavery, in order to provide for her none performing and disrespectful husband. Delia also shows her love for her husband by remaining in an abusive marriage for fifteen years. She stayed with him through the physical beatings, the verbal abuse and the affair that her husband is having.

Manipulation of Women In the play A Doll House by Henrik Ibsen, symbolizes the nature of Helmer's marriage. The play was less about the rights of women than about human rights; generally less about the particular social conditions responsible for the position of women (Diyanni 1053). Marriage is also a prevailing theme in the “Story of an Hour”. In this story marriage is portrayed as a prison, an asylum, captivity or an oppressive tool of society, to govern and control women. The story of an hour is centered on a message that should bring sorrow to a wife; on the other hand the wife uses the message to breathe a sigh of relief and begins to thing about how much her life will be better with her husband dead now. Her taught alone forces on to think of why a wife would be so excited to hear that her husband is dead. This wife after hearing the news asks to be by herself, not to grieve alone but to fantasize and begins to enjoy her new life. The wife sits in her favorite chair, stares at the sky, embraces the fresh air and begins to think of spring time, where the trees will be putting out new leaves signifying a rebirth a new life, her new life, her new beginning. The woman in this story knows that the only way for her to be free from the constraints of marriage and society is if her husband dies. The walls of marriage has place a massive strain on the wife in this story, to the point that she is ready to give up being married to be by herself. Being in the marriage that she was in enduring the blows of marital demands begun to challenge her mental faculties. In the end the wife dies not as a result of being devastated by her lost, but by the fact that her husband was not dead. The fact that he was alive shocked her. She died instantly. If he wasn’t dead, she rather be dead instead of living another minute as a prisoner and unappreciated or unequal in her marriage.
The Essay on Husband Vs Wife Women Men Interpersonal
Since the traditional conceptions of masculinity and femininity define man as instrumental and woman as expressive, then it follows that men and women can function in their traditional roles only in conjunction with each other. Each requires the other in order to perform at their peak in the world. A man is incomplete without nurturing and tenderness and when he cannot find these qualities within ...
In both “Sweat and the Story of an hour” marriage is showed as a role of convenience, a role of double standards, and an unequal status and as a tool used by society to keep women in place. In both stories women are subjected to be loving, supporting, and submissive and care takers, while the men are allowed to neglect their role. A woman is expected to stay at home, take care of the kids, and fulfill their husband’s desire and maintain their beauty. After doing all that the husbands mistreat their wives by physically and mentally abuse them to the point that they wish death upon their husbands. The husbands use marriage as convenience, a wife role is clearly defined but all the work goes unnoticed. Husband uses marriage to find a replacement mother for themselves. The roles are not evenly distributed, the wife is neglected and the husband is the one who gets all the glory. In Both stories women are suppressed and tormented by their husband, they are pushed to the point that the human side of them is revealed. Noticeably for the women in these stories, there comes a time when a person has taken all they can stand, thereafter the individual is forced to take action. Both women were aware of their situation, so they did what was need of them to be free from the burthen on marriage.
Marriage is a beautiful and moral step. Marriage is an act that was endorsed by “God “in the days of our savior “Jesus Christ”. As time has changed marriage has become an act of convenience, motivated only by the society. Society’s expectation is very high and it has many views dictating a person’s actions, nonetheless, the expectation of marriage is the legacy that was before us. However, In both situation it proves that women were prisoners of marriage, and as a prisoner one would do anything possible to get out. Delia from the story “Sweat,” is believed to have left her husband to died, because that was her opportunity to get out of the marriage without actually having to do something wrong on her own, whilst Mrs. Mollard from the “Story of an Hour” seem to have been content with the news that her husband had dies in the train crash, her contentment shows a sign of relief. In my opinion I would say that on all of their part, they played a role of deceitfulness, because the vows of marriage is taking an oath which states, “in good and bad times,” and it clearly shows that Delia as well as her husband was deceitful in the end, because of actually helping her husband, she left him there to die. In Mrs. Mollard thoughts and actions, she was also deceitful, because instead of actually stating the truth or showing her true emotions, she sucked in it and made others believe otherwise. From these stories, I have learned that, we should not venture off into marriage, unless we are sure that we really want to be with the other person. We should take time to get to know someone, because once we involve our self in marriage it is very hard to turn back. In Marriage we need to be open, honest, and respectful
