Tourism in South Africa is known as the biggest sector economically; however, it is still a part of an emerging industry (Burger, 2011, para.1).
South Africa is located on the continent’s southern tip bordering the Atlantic Ocean on the West, and bordering the Indian Ocean on the South and East (South Africa, 2005, para.1).
The total population of South Africa in 2010 is estimated to be 49,109,107 (South Africa, 2005, page 1).
The objective of this report is to analyze the tourism industry in South Africa, to implicate the impacts that affect the tourism industry, and to develop a recommendation in order to help improve the tourism industry. The report discusses three main impacts on the tourism industry in South Africa which includes economic, environmental, and heritage impacts.
Overview of Tourism in South Africa
Some of the major tourist attractions that can be found in South Africa include Kruger National Park, Cape Town, Durban, and the beaches (“Top 10 Attractions”, n.d.).
The art in South Africa varies from bead work to sculpting pottery. Bead work and the sculpting of pottery is a part of South African heritage and culture (“South Africa’s Arts”, n.d.).
A lot of famous South African dishes are of different origin due to South Africa being colonized by other countries in the past. Some of South Africa’s well known dishes include Boerewors, which is a German immigrant legacy and salad of Malay which is originated in India (“South African Cuisine”, 2003, para.9).
The Essay on Human rights in South Africa
Summary: Stephen Lewis is attempting to get Canadians to support a grassroot aids project in hopes of raising money in numerous ways. These ways are referred to as dares and Canadian citizens are encouraged to participate in various dares to raise money. Since Canada was in an economic recession at this time they were not able to participate in donating money to Africa, Throughout this project, ...
Impacts
Economic
South Africa develops economically when it hosts business conferences and sporting events. Not only does South Africa have higher revenue, it also gains attention from the media exposing itself to the world. Due to the FIFA World Cup, South Africa has invested in improving the roads, upgrading the train stations, and including more integrated public transport networks. This event alone brought 309,554 foreigners to South Africa for the sole purpose of attending the World Cup (“Impacts of 2010”, n.d., page 2).
Environmental
Tourism development has a negative impact on the environment. The noise and air pollution is increasing since there are more people visiting South Africa and there is more traffic now. If tourism establishments do not take the environment into consideration then the clean air, safe water, and the attractive scenery will start to gradually start to diminish and deplete (“Responsible Tourism”, 2003, page 21).
Heritage
Some of South Africa’s most visited cities include Cape Town and KwaZulu-Natal/ Durban. The reason why those cities are tourist attractions is because Cape Town and KwaZulu-Natal/ Durban have very well preserved culture and heritage. This heritage portrays “the country’s rich historical past which dates back to the earliest human settlements in the world” (“Heritage of”, n.d., para.1).
Fossilized footprints can be found near Cape Town and ancient rock paintings can be found in KwaZulu-Natal. The fossilized footprints and rock paintings give tourists a stimulating understanding to South Africa’s culture and heritage (“Heritage of”, n.d., para.1).

In 2010, there were 8,073,552 tourists that visited South Africa. This was 15.1% more than the amount of tourists that went to South Africa in 2009 (“2010 Annual Tourism”, 2010, page 1).
The Essay on Exploring South Africa Culture
There are many countries that display various types and forms of communication, especially in some countries of Africa. One of the most toured and “rainbow” diverse country in Africa is apparently South Africa. Even though most of the country is predominantly black, it is also known to be one of the most multicultural countries in the world. In fact, there are many different ethnic groups that ...
This increase was due to the FIFA World Cup. Hosting the FIFA World Cup gave South Africa a great advantage in helping the tourism industry develop. Not only did South Africa gain better recognition due to media exposure, it also gave the opportunity for South Africa to develop as a country. If South Africa hosts more international events or conferences then this would help South Africa gain more revenue and media exposure (“The New Gold”, 2007, page 15).
The domino-effect mentality can be used to explain the benefits of hosting international events. The more media exposure, the more tourists would want to visit South Africa; hence, the more revenue gained, consequently the quicker South Africa becomes a well-developed country.
Although tourism in South Africa is increasing, there are many factors that can contribute to gradually decrease and perhaps even stop the growth in tourism. These factors include the lack of security for the tourists in South Africa (South Africa, n.d., page 8).
Many potential tourists have concerns for their safety and if this is not tended to, then safety might act as a constriction to tourism growth in South Africa. Another factor that may contribute to inhibit tourism growth in South Africa is the intermittent power shortages. These power shortages could harm tourism growth on a long-term basis since this would affect the interest of the investors investing in the tourism sector (South Africa, n.d., page 8).
If the government underestimates these problems then there might be a chance that the tourism growth will eventually reach a halt and it may even drop heavily.
Conclusion
This business report concludes that South Africa has increased greatly in terms of the tourism industry and recognition. South Africa still has a lot more room to develop and grow in regards to the tourism industry. There are many factors that have an impact on the tourism industry such as the heritage in South Africa, the economy, and the environment. Some of these impacts have helped South Africa grow in terms of the tourism industry; however, some of these impacts may also be a potential cause to inhibit the growth of tourism. South Africa should be cautious and alert as to prevent over-growth of tourism in a short period of time. If this happens, then the government will not be able to provide the power supply. This in turn will also be a potential cause that would eventually diminish the tourism industry in South Africa.
The Essay on Influence of South Africa
It is reported that South Africa has become the third largest iron ore supplier for China through the competition with India, which will have a great influence on China’s mining machinery industry. According to Business Day Live’s report, the iron ore export to China from South Africa was 40.6 million tonnes in 2012, while Indian exports plunged nearly 55% to 33 million tonnes. It is evidently ...
Recommendations
It is recommended that:
* South Africa has a very rich culture and heritage. This heritage is one of the main reasons that attract tourists. The heritage can also be seen through the art in South Africa, it portrays an image of South Africa’s past. South Africa should try to sustain their rich heritage as much as possible.
* There has been a few conferences and events held in South Africa in the past; however, none were as big as the FIFA World Cup in 2010. If more events or conferences are hosted in South Africa, then this would help the tourism industry develop and increase without a doubt.
* There are many beautiful settings and sceneries in South Africa, a lot of effort should be made in order to maintain and cherish the beautiful sights.
* In order to maintain the growth of the tourism industry, the government should take action and support the tourism industry by providing sufficient power supply.
