1. Introduction
Although suffering tremendous pressure from mushrooming supermarkets and shopping malls, the traditional market in Vietnam retains an important position in the Vietnamese lifestyle. Vietnamese people can feel the proximity of traditional markets. They can always find a market in their neighborhood. A huge number of housewives prefer to buy things they need at the traditional open-air markets instead of air-conditioned minimarts or spacious supermarkets. There are many things available here and people can buy anything they need from food to electrical goods. The noise is heard everywhere since market-goers all bargain over the stuff so that they can buy things at the cheap price and with good quality most of all. Traditional market is not simply a market as western or American supermarket, but the place that comprises the close images to each Vietnamese soul. The market is not only the place for doing shopping but also the place for meeting to exchange information. People will be attracted to the atmosphere at the traditional markets where they can find more human communication as well as friendly smile of simple and sincere folks, which hardly exists at the luxury shopping malls.
There is a lively communication between buyers and sellers. “Hundreds of sellers, thousands of buyers”: It means competition something normal and even they are competitors, they are still friends. And sellers and buyers can become friends. It is not rare that they exchange the greetings: “Do you eat fish today?”, “Have you finished selling vegetables” Then they can meet in the street and talk like long lost friends. Especially, it is a place for expressing local culture. Each place has its own market with distinctive features and people can find out unique local culture while visiting markets. For example, market is the place for young people who want to find the other part of their life, the popular markets like this are Sapa love market, Khau vai love market in Lao Cai and Ha Giang. It is popular that Vietnam’s largest markets are Đồng Xuân in Hanoi, Đông Ba in Hue and Bến Thành in Sai Gon. 2. Distinctive Features of Traditional Vietnamese Market
| |Traditional market |super market |
|Variety of merchandise |Limited |Various |
|Amount that customers need |Small or big amount |Only big amounts |
|Customer service |Better and humane |Indifferent |
|Convenience |Have to get up early |Anytime |
|Packing |plain |elegant |
|Consuming environment |messy |clean |
|Payment |cash |cash and credit cash |
Look at the table above, we can see that traditional markets are very different from super markets in many ways. Firstly, the merchandise (goods for sale) of traditional market is much fresher than the freezing food of super market. For example, the pork seller might draw his merchandise from the pig killer on that day and sold it out on the same day. Secondly, speaking of the price of merchandise, buying things in traditional market would cost you more than in super market. The reason is most sellers in traditional are just retailers. They won’t wholesale too much in case the merchandise cannot be sold out on the same day. Compared to the traditional market, the super market wholesales a lot and the wholesale price that super markets get must be much cheaper than the traditional. So, the price of merchandise in super market can be cheaper. However, although the price of merchandise in the traditional markets is much more expensive, it’s also more flexible. Customers can bargain with the sellers to get a satisfactory price in the traditional market, but they cannot do the same things in the supermarket. The price of merchandise in the supermarket is fixed. Thirdly, customers can buy many kinds of things at the same time in one super market, but they have to go to different stalls to buy pork, vegetables, and so on in the traditional market.
The Essay on Agricultural Market Price Prices Government
1. Would the US economy be better off without government intervention in agriculture Who would benefit Who would lose 2. Are large price movements inevitable in agricultural markets What other mechanisms might be used to limit such movements 3. Farmers can eliminate the uncertainties of fluctuating crop prices by selling their crops in "futures" markets (agreeing to a fixed price for crops to be ...
Fourthly, if the customer needs only a small amount of merchandise, going to the traditional market would be a best choice. The reason is that customer cannot buy a small amount in the super market. Fifthly, customer service that the traditional markets provide is better and more humane. The sellers in the traditional markets would try to offer services to meet customers’ needs such as recipe, suggestions, chat, care, and gifts. However, the clerks in the supermarket may not offer the same services to customers. They will not chat with you, give you discount, or give you anything as the present while you buy a lot. The interaction between clerks and customers are passive and less. Sixthly, the open hours of the traditional market are from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. When they have to work, they might have no time to go to the traditional market. If they don’t have to work on weekends and plan to buy things in the traditional market, they have to get up early. However, the open hours of super market is much more available for the young people who have jobs. They can go to supermarket after job in week days, and they can go to super market in the afternoon if they get up late in the weekend. Seventhly, the packing of merchandise in the supermarket is more elegant and attracting. Eighthly, another reason that people choose to go to supermarket is clean and comfortable consuming environment. They do not have to worry about the weather, bad smell, or messy ground. In the end, customers can bring little money and pay via a credit card in the super market.

Price elasticity of demand is defined as how demand changes as a result of a change in price. It can be said that if a reduction in price leads to an increase in demand then demand is relatively elastic. Elasticity is usually negative. There is an alternative scenario where demand will increase as price does so too. This happens only in the case of Giff en goods, where elasticity is positive. The ...
3. Primary Activities in Traditional Vietnamese Market
Besides trading activity, they go to the market to share information; elderly and middle age meet each other to ask about health, family and the growth of children and grandchildren of each family. They share good news with smiles on the lips and bad news with consolation. Sometimes, they offer each other to visit house when they have free time. 4. Arising Problems and Tips for Foreigners
When shopping at traditional Vietnamese markets, foreign customers can have some troubles with language barrier, locals’ curiosity and overcharging. In addition, there are some suggestions for them to deal with these problems so that they can satisfy when shopping at traditional markets.
Foreigners shop at traditional Vietnamese markets can have some problems. Firstly, they can get locals’ curiosity and many sellers as well as buyers may stare at them. Secondly, they often buy at the higher price because they are not used to bargaining. Thirdly, foreign customers can face to language barrier. They know little Vietnamese and can use some common expressions when shopping such as “bao nhieu tien” or words of quantity. For the Vietnamese, they also can not communicate in English. This is the barrier to both foreign buyers and sellers when talk about price or the usage of goods. In many cases, language barrier is the cause of buying at higher price.
To deal with these problems, there are some suggestions for foreign customers. At the first place, it is advisable to ignore the curiosity. When shopping or traveling in Vietnam, foreigners not only get locals’ curiosity, but also admiration. This behavior is one of the Vietnamese people’s characteristics, friendliness and openness. Therefore, if they understand it, they will not feel uncomfortable. In many cases, foreigners can be invited to enjoy food or drink freely after chatting with stall keeper in Vietnamese. This is one of the way Vietnamese show their hospitality to foreign buyers.
The next suggestion is to bring a pocket calculator to calculate currency conversions. To deal with language barrier, they can go with a Vietnamese friend. They can translate what sellers introduce their goods as well as service in to their mother tongue so they have more ideas about the goods. Furthermore, use Vietnamese currency whenever possible. They are much more precise because of their lower value. Keep plenty of small change too. It is also best to avoid Saturday and Sunday because markets are incredibly crowed and price is higher than other days in week.
In addition, if foreigners do not want to buy at the high price, they should go with the native people, bargain and bargain hard. The native friend can not only reduce the language barrier, but also give them some good advice about price as well as the quality of goods. If not, there are some things they can do. For example, it is advisable to wait for a local to get the same item and observe how much it is paid. If they cannot buy with this price, they can go shopping around in other location and they can get more realistic price. You can also seek around for something else which maybe they do not want to, but you know the price. Then ask price of goods they want to buy in this shop. They should consider how reasonable the price in general.
Last but not least, they should bargain and bargain hard. Almost goods in traditional Vietnamese market have not price tags, so the prices offered can double the “normal” street price. In some cases, sellers overcharge up to five times the normal price. If they find out the price is more than they would pay at home, it is obviously too much. Vietnamese sellers always overcharge especially to foreigners, so their offer should be 50%, 30% or even 20% of the price. They will rarely see the price tags in a traditional market. However, price tags or not, shopper should bargain hard skillfully if they do not want to be overcharged. Bargaining should be good-natured, smile and do not get angry. The next art of bargaining is to use walking away. When you tend to not accept the price and go away, sellers will call you and sell goods with that price.
All the above is some problems foreigners can have face to as well as tips for them when they go shopping at traditional Vietnamese markets. It is hoped that foreign customers will know more problems to avoid them.
5. Game and Discussion
Game: The class will be divided into two teams. One student will be invited to go to the board to guess the words such as bargaining, offering goods. The members of each team will have to use their body language to describe the words so that the student on the board can guess and say the given words correctly. Each word that can be successfully described and correctly guessed will be 1 point. The group which gets more points will be the winner.
Discussion:
If you are the authority in Vietnam, what will you do to improve traditional markets?
Traditional markets play an important role in Vietnamese life. However, the survey reveals some problems of the traditional markets: (1) Infrastructural problems: insufficient sales space, lack of building maintenance, insufficient circulation space and traffic management, lack of parking and unloading areas, inadequate drainage and severe flooding problems, inadequate site security and overnight storage facilities, and inadequate sanitation provision. (2) Social and managerial problems: difficulties in enforcing market laws and regulations, and lack of market management system. If there is an improvement in the running of the traditional markets, it is most likely possible to reduce crop losses; to improve the efficiency of the market operations; to get a better public health, amenity and aesthetic; to save time; to generate public funds; to increase income from additional services; and mainly, to have a positive impact on agricultural production. In order to improve the traditional markets and to achieve the aforementioned benefits for local farmers and local inhabitants, the following actions should be conducted by the local government with the implication of retailers, farmers and local inhabitants: (1) improve the traditional market management systems; (2) enforce rules which should guarantee discipline and order; (3) reorganize the selling places; (4) renew the traditional market facilities; (5) improve hygiene; (6) provide security and improve the convenience of the traditional markets; (7) make new regulations to protect the existence of the traditional markets;
Conclusion
Traditional market is an essential and indispensable part of Vietnamese lifestyle. Market gives people a chance to join the public meeting where they can go shopping to exchange goods, having small talk, informal conversation after tiring hours at work or for housework. It is also the place where distinctive local culture is expressed in the freest and the closet way. Visiting market is the effective way to understand more about the way Vietnamese people communicate with each other. Market is also the most useful place for foreigners who want to learn Vietnamese language and to practice. The lesson aims to provide foreigners with basic knowledge of traditional markets in Vietnam to understand more about Vietnam’s actual life and culture as well as supply them with useful tips for communicating well especially when they have chance to go to traditional Vietnamese markets.
