We can’t imagine our lives without it anymore, by having one using it from hour to hour on a daily basis. Multi-purpose as it had accustomed us, right from the beginning, the “Internet” has pushed well-established limits forward, in terms of jobs, socializing, financing, information or entertainment. Its full potential is not used, yet it will be discovered in future, it is predictable. However, there are numerous limitations reported to using such technology, as it creates dependancy. Deaths have been found out of children or teenagers spending 24 hrs. or more on the internet. Another serious problem would be the inverse effect of virtual socializing. Instead of having people talking to each other, you get messengers in form of (computer and internet), speaking for yourself. This affects not only the youth but also adults as it tends to change their moods/emotions and bring introverts out of them. However, it is important to look at the internet’s history, how it all started, how it did progress over such a short period of time and most important, the complexity of its system.

The history of the internet has its roots to as early as 1957, right after URSS successfully managed to launch the world’s first artificial satellite on the orbit and the U.S. created ARPA – Advanced Research Projects Agency in response. However, today’s concepts of online calling, socializing, or even banking were vague back then and represented gigantic ideals. The concept of “internet” did not really exist. Fifty-five years later, we are now able to access any information on the “World Wide Web”, make calls, watch movies, socialize and even dispose ourselves of total control over our house (remote control) through a click of a button and an internet connection. “First recorded “beginnings” of social interactions which could be enabled trough networking, represented numerous memos belonging to and written by J.C.R. Licklider of MIT in August 1962. He was telling of a “Galactic Network” – a global interconnection of computers concept. Everybody could quickly access any wanted data or program from different sites.” (“Brief History of the Internet”).
“Few years later, in 1969, ARPANET program was presented to BBN and later on, ARPA was renamed to DARPA – The Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency. In 1973, TCP/IP is being developed as a sort of upgrade, enabling communications between computers on different networks. In 1983 it becomes the standard for internet protocol. 1983 becomes the year of the invention of the “Domain Name System” allowing domain names to be automatically assigned an IP number. Number of traffic and hosts rise and a replacement for he T1 lines is thought of as a solution. However, in 1989, ARPANET ceases to exist.” (“The History of the Internet”.) Later on, access is released publicly with the name of the “World Wide Web”, giving birth to many more hosts and speed development. Domain names were no longer free and in the mid 90’s, the first virtual bank got hosted on the internet as well as Pizza Hut’s first online ordering system. Soon it all turned into an addictive madness, people occasionally dying from spending too many hours in front of the computer and the internet respectively.

The internet, the one young technology that we can’t easily separate our lives from, is quite complex than one would imagine. It requires series of cables, servers, routers, modems, to transfer information between your personal computer and the “World Wide Web”. “It is important to divide the internet into two main components : the hardware and the protocols. The hardware is made out of each and every cable transferring terabits of information and your computer. Hardware can be made of anything able to capture internet signals, such as smartphones, radios, routers, etc. These are called clients, anything used to connect to the internet and access information. There are as well servers, stocking information up the internet and the transmission lines representing either signals or cables used to connect.” (“HowStuffWorks” – “How Does the Internet Work”).
The hardware represents mainly the physical part of the internet. However, there’s also the second part which deals mainly with programming and that is all about protocols. “The protocols represent a set of rules that all machines connected to the internet have to follow in order to establish connections between them. Two such important protocols are TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and the IP (Internet Protocol).
They are often grouped together as TCP/IP. Their task is to decide upon rules how the information is passed through the internet. Without them, computers would have to find ways to connect to each other and complicate themselves more. Each machine connected to the internet contains an IP address which can be later used to be discovered by other machines. The TCP/IP acquires your requested information and then sends it to the DNS – Domain Name Server which then passes further your information and replies back to your request.” (“HowStuffWorks” – “How Does the Internet Work1”).

Complex programming along with physical components have made easy the possibility of connecting computers together through internet, without having to deal with matters of distance, moving globalization a step further. The internet’s actual capability and future potentiality is way beyond one can ever imagine, and it has been able to leave a big mark on our future.
Why has it become an indispensable piece of technology and why is it of great importance that one should have access to an internet connection? Nowadays, people are able to access the internet from any device which allows the use of either 3G cellular data network (if available) or a Wi-Fi wireless network. Further on, they are able to access any available information, socialize, watch movies or even have a live TV broadcast. People may listen to music, play games or deal with personal business affairs with the help of the internet. Another real-life application represents the navigational GPS system, which can be stored on a mobile smartphone and be enabled using the power of internet (cellular data network respectively).
Newspapers and books can be read on the internet through any electronic host that is capable of connecting to and accessing the internet.
In conclusion, the future seems bright for technology and the development of the internet. A cease of existing to such a utility can never be talked of. There can only be a case of improvement. The internet has become a necessity to the despair of people against computer addictiveness. Unfortunately, internet has become a matter of piracy, people being able to download, share and upload numerous songs, videos, and intellectual property, without the consent of owners. The owners lost money this way and something had to be done about it (ACTA, SOPA, PIPA, etc.).

Since, its public opening in the mid 90’s, the internet has been greatly developed over a short amount of time. There are other possibilities which the internet holds, being needed to be discovered. More or less fortunately, small things adding to each other over time have made possible the apparition of such invention and people have become rather dependent of such utility. One big question still remains unanswered and will probably continue to stay this way: “How would our world look now, without having the invention of internet?”
