It is one of her most popular books about foolish gang rivalry existing between the Socs, the rich kids from the west side of town, and the Greasers, the poor kids from the east side. The most recognized and famous of all of S.E. Hinton’s works is The Outsiders which she published in 1967. The story was inspired by two rival gangs at her high school, the Greasers and the Socs. The story is set in Oklahoma in 1965. The plot involves Ponyboy, the main character, who is a member of the Greasers gang. It all starts when he is leaving a movie theater & is jumped by some Socs. His older brothers, Darry & Sodapop save him. Later, Ponyboy met a girl that is some-what part of the Socs gang in a drive-in movie, Cherry. He realized that she wasn’t like the rest of the Socs. Ponyboy & his friends Johnny and Dally decided to walk home Cherry and her friend Marcia. On their way some Socs who appeared to be the two girls’ girlfriends confronted them but nothing happened. When Ponyboy arrived to his house later that night, his older brother Darry, who is also in charge of him since their parents’ death, hit him and Ponyboy ran away. While walking with Johnny who was also escaped they encountered a group of drunken Socs. After one of them nearly drowned Ponyboy, Johnny stabbed Bob one of the Socs and caused his death. Ponyboy & Johnny ran to Dally who could help them.
He gave them money & a loaded gun and told them to hide in an abandoned church. They stay there a few days, until Dally came back to get them. He mentions that the two rival groups are at an all-time high conflict & a rumble was going to take place soon. Johnny decided he would turn himself in to avoid any conflict. Before he could do so, he realized that a group of children entered the church without them noticing & the church caught fire. When Johnny & Ponyboy re-entered to rescue the kids, burning timber from the roof fell and broke Johnny’s back. Dally later rescues Johnny. Ponyboy is relatively unscathed and spends a short time in the hospital. When his brothers arrived to see him, Darry broke down and cried. Ponyboy then realizes that Darry cares about him, and is only hard on Ponyboy because he wants him to have a good future. Two-Bit, one of the Greasers, later informed that Johnny & Ponyboy were declared heroes, but Johnny was still accused of manslaughter for Bob’s death. In the rumble that would settle all disputes between the rival gangs, the Greasers won. They won but with tough consequences, Johnny who had escaped the hospital to fight died. Dally who was at the hospital, escaped when he heard the news of Johnny & decided to rob a store, where he was shot down by police. Ponyboy after the entire rumble is unconscious, and stays sick for about a week. When he went back to school his grades dropped. His English teacher says he will pass him if he writes a polite theme. He decided to write the theme on the recent events.
The Essay on Ponyboy Johnny Socs One
In the novel The Outsiders the character I chose was Ponyboy. Ponyboy was a good kid but he has just one problem, he is a greaser. The greasers are a gang that no one really likes. They are the under privileged poor kids. They have one major rival gang, the Socs. Socs stands for socials, they are the complete opposite of the greasers, the yare the rich kids. One day after Ponyboy and his friend ...
The Outsiders is a very controversial book. It has been banned from certain high schools because of the portrayal of gang violence, under aged smoking & drinking, as well as strong language. In other schools the book is part of the curriculum. S.E. Hinton describes The Outsiders as her best-selling book. What she most likes about it is that it has taught a lot of kids to enjoy reading. The book since its publication has sold more than 14 million copies & still sells more than 500,000 a year. Critics say that the story changed the way youth-adult fiction is written. The book has won awards such as: New York Tribune Best Teenage Books List in 1967, Chicago Tribune Book World Spring Book Festival Honor Book in 1967, the Media & Methods Maxi Award in 1975, ALA Best Young Adult Book in 1975, and the Massachusetts Children’s Book Award in 1979. Many critics call this book, “the best story they have ever read” and is very highly recommended. My personal opinion on the book is that it is very good. It is one of my favorite books. It catches your attention from beginning to end, and it is very tense. The drama and the turn of the events make it very entertaining. It is one of the reasons why I chose to write about S.E. Hinton, and her famous story.
