After finished the “1984” written by George Orwell in the 1940s, the main thing that are appreciated is that the threat of the communist party toward the western democracy society. The story is based on the Stalin period of Russia. Orwell perfectly uses the love from Winston and Julia had to demonstrate there are still loves in the numbness society and he also uses those poor people’s behavior to reflect the little bitty humanity that remained in Big-Brother’s government. But love and humanity are served as a foil to indicate the powerful and ruthless Big-Brother society, in another way; it’s a reflection of the communist party that was getting stronger and stronger and become a threat to the west. George Orwell also tried to warn people that do not put all their trust or your rights to government or they may end just like the people in the book. The Big Brother is the symbol of the party, and the idealism of blind loyalty was indicated in the symbol, the party’s agenda is to eliminate every human being’s thought, to destroy love to overcome them easily, so there is no possible way that they could fight against the party or maybe even realize that the party is doing the wrong thing.
The main character of “1984” is Winston Smith, he is described as a Criminal in this book because he knows the past, that’s the most important thing because he knows which is better and which is worse, in this case, the present he lives is defiantly worse, to the party, this kind of person is definitely going to be eliminate. “Do you realize that the past, starting from yesterday, has been actually abolished? If it survives anywhere, it’s in a few solid objects with no words attached to them, like that lump of glass there. Already we know almost literally nothing about the Revolution and the years before the Revolution. Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street and building has been renamed, and every date has been altered. And that process is continuing day-by-day and minute-by-minute”, the sentence that Winston said is the reason, which is that Winston’s knows too much, and he has the ability to appreciate that the thing that the party is doing now is wrong, and for the party, “ ignorance is strength” indicates that the party prefer the ignorant people that create nothing but loyalty to the party; inversely, people who has knowledge now become threat because they are too hard to control.

“Who controls the past controls the future”. Orwell perfectly reflects the situation that happened in Stalin’s period of Russia. Retro respect the history after WWII, those people who stand out against Stalin had all been “vaporized”, the Stalin’s government practiced the similar policy like the slogan in the book: “ignorance is strength”, so they can keep people ignorant enough to control. We all know that Stalin was an ambitious person, we could not even imagine that millions ignorant people that served for him and do whatever he want them to do. “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—for ever.” The purpose of the book has been indicated here is that the Stalin’s society is going to be a big threat to the West.
Humanity and love are portrayed a lot in “1984”. The love that happened in the book is the love between Winston and Julia. Their love started at the “accident” when Julia told Winston “I love you”, that make Winston believed again that there is still hope. “The smell of her hair, the taste of her mouth, the feeling of her skin seemed to have got inside him or into the air all around him. She had become a physical necessity.” In the past, sex for Winston is unthinkable, because the sex between each comrade is a big sin, but now he and Julia are having sex literally everyday, which tells us that the party is not “perfect” enough, but the party actually is aware of these things, they are just monitoring them, and suddenly they are caught by the man who seems trustable—-O’Brien. Same things happened in Stalin’s Russia, where the government sent out those supervisors to monitor those people who tend to break the rule. Cold blood is another feature of Stalin’s Russia, there wasn’t any mercy or sympathy in the country, and instead, they even destroy the love that remained in the society. In the case in “1984”, which the government make the family has no love to each other, or make them numbness.

Generally , we think the book doesn’t make any sense because it doesn’t obey the general rule that the justice beats the evil, instead , the evil literally eliminate all the justice and seems like the evil becomes the “ justice”. “1984” not only reflects the threats to the west but also tells people that do not give too many things to let the government to handle, sometimes we will have to doubt them, or we will have exact the situation that happened in “1984”
