The Academy award winning movie “A Beautiful Mind” is a truly inspiring film that demonstrates triumph over schizophrenia. The main character is played by Russell Crowe who is portraying John Nash a mathematical genius who suffers from schizophrenia, who later went on to receive the Nobel Prize in Economical Sciences. This film describes the disturbance in thinking, emotion and perception that characterizes the disorder. This film also contributes to society’s understanding of schizophrenia. It argues the stereotype of this disease as being dangerous and unable to function and emphasizes the importance of treatment and support.
The movie also communicates the importance of these factors that contributed to Nash’s recovery and achievements from the disorder and how it greatly affects the life of others around. The thinking and emotional symptoms of schizophrenia that John seemed to portray are called “negative” because they are an absence as much as a presence: inexpressive faces, blank looks, monotone and monosyllabic speech, few gestures, seeming lack of interest in the world and other people. You see them getting into a physical altercation when John can’t come up with a theory and Charles is trying to explain that it’s not him, it’s the outsiders. In the movie you see John asking Charles if he should marry Alicia and Charles approves. To ask such an important question and to look for advice, shows how strong the hallucinations for some may be. Another key factor in John’s life is a man named William Parcher. Parcher observes Nash’s performance from above, while partially concealed behind a screen. Parcher gives Nash a new assignment to look for patterns in magazines and newspapers, ostensibly to thwart a Soviet plot.
He must write a report of his findings and place them in a specified mailbox. After being chased by the Russians and exchanging gunfire, Nash becomes increasingly paranoid and begins to behave erratically. This is when you start to see John’s appearance become sloppy and his facial demeanor change. In most schizophrenic people the stress seems to make hallucinations the worst, as for John this is when his wife begins to notice something is wrong. While at a math lecture at Harvard, John is approached by Dr. Rosen of the psychiatric hospital.
Due to his hallucinations he believes them to be soviets and that he has been captured. To try and prove to John that none of this is real Alicia goes to the drop location for the secret documents John had been working on and brings the un-opened envelopes to him. Finally Nash is convinced that he has been hallucinating and after a painful series of insulin shock therapy sessions, Nash is released on the condition that he agrees to take antipsychotic medication. As for being Nash’s wife Alicia was greatly impacted by his schizophrenia. In the movie she’s asked by one of John’s co-workers how she is doing.
She responds by saying obligation to stay, guilt to leave and that she also had rage at John and God. That at times when she felt this way she would force herself to see the man she married. Thankfully she never gave up on John, even in the toughest of times. Frustrated, Nash wants to stop the medication and tells the doctor he can apply his mind to stop the hallucinating, the doctor tells him his mind is the problem in the first place. However, the drugs created negative side-effects that affect his relationship with his wife and, most dramatically, his intellectual capacity.

John secretly starts hiding his pills in a box, and this is when Parcher appears again and tells John he has another assignment for him. After an incident with his son almost drowning Alicia gets very upset and starts to leave. Parcher tells John he needs to finish her, or they will be compromised. Parcher pulls out a gun and John runs and pushes Alicia and the baby out of harm’s way. To John he has just saved his family, but Alicia and their child have now been physically affected by his hallucinations.
Alicia takes her son and tries to leave and hat’s when John comes out and stands in front of the car and says “She never gets old, Marcie can’t be real. ” This is when you see Alicia fully commit to the love and support its going to take to help John. Treatment and recovery for most schizophrenic patients isn’t a guarantee and many will become dependent on medication. And many doctors will highly encourage a schizophrenic to stay on medication to avoid relapse. The outcome of this movie isn’t a normal result for people suffering from cognitive disorders, many will struggle with the disorder for the rest of their natural life.
Thankfully with the support of his wife and social support from his colleagues Nash eventually earns the privilege of teaching again. He is honored by his fellow professors for his achievement in mathematics, and goes on to win the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics for his revolutionary work on game theory. Proving that without medication hallucinations will always be an issue. At the end of the movie it shows Nash and Alicia leaving the auditorium in Stockholm, when John sees Charles, Marcie and Parcher standing and smiling.
Alicia asks John, “What’s wrong? ” John replies, “Nothing. With that, they both leave the auditorium. It shows that the hallucinations will never fully go away and it’s a struggle he will continue to battle with. This movie is a courageous film to show one man’s struggle with diversity and achieve so much even though having such a debilitating disease. Many schizophrenic people will just struggle to live a normally daily life, and will never achieve such greatness. Though his thinking, emotions, and perceptions of life may have been a little different than ours it still lead him to a beautiful life, with a beautiful mind.
