A Bio-Bibliographical Study of Langston Hughes A bio-bibliographical study of Langston Hughes Within this paper life, activity, public and creative work of Langston Hughes is discussed. This study is divided into several major parts. Firstly, biography: early years, adolescence and mature age, Hughes activity and significance in Harlem Renaissance and Civil Rights Movement are considered. Then, the situation of the Afro-Americans in the USA during the time of the 1920s to the 1960s is described from a basis of a few selected Langston Hughes’ poems. As Langston Hughes himself makes use of the terms “Negro” and “Blacks” they will also be used in this paper, as well as “Afro-Americans” without any mean to political-incorrectness or mean intention. And, finally, conclusion is brought with some considerations and reflections about Langston Hughes as person and poet. Biography James Mercer Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri in 1902. He was named James after his father, but it was dropped early in life, and he grew up as Langston.
Hughes parents divorced when he was young and his mother left Langston to spend most of his early childhood living with his grandmother. His grandmother was an old woman with nowhere near as much energy as a youn.
