Speaking about the simmilaries of these two ways of communication I can say that both telephone and email have made communication between people less personal, much easier and they brought the time issue almost to zero. If talking about the business world, meetings with other people face to face is considered to be more formal and requires special outlook, preparation and formality. But when the same talk is done by such ways of communication as phone or email it makes it less personal and usually requires less formality. But of course there some cases that neither way of communication is appropriate: presentations, signing a contract, etc. The time issue also benefit from using either ways of communication. The amount of time that it takes e-mail or phone call is not even a percentage of the time it takes postal service to go through.
Both way of communication are very reliable, because usually the message goes right to the recipient and no one else. The ease of sending mail electronically and making just a phone call has made the amount of hard copy mail drop enough to make the postal service raise their prices.
