The Last Supper was a painting by Leonardo da Vinci produced in late 15th century. Leonardo painted the painting on Santa Maria della Grazie convent wall in Milan. The work stayed around 1495 and commissioned as part of a renovation plan to the church and convent buildings by Ludovico Sforza. The painting depicts the scene of the Last Supper Jesus had with his disciples according to John13:21. Leonardo shows the consternation that happened among the 12 disciples when Jesus declared that one of the disciples would betray him. Though Leonardo has painted many paintings, the Last Supper is his most popular one.
Leonardo developed the painting well to show the Last Supper. He decided to capture the moment when Jesus told his disciples that one of them would betray him. Leonardo has shown the reaction of the disciples after hearing the news. Jesus’ message causes a visible response in the form of waves of emotion among the disciples. The apostles react differently to Jesus message with different degrees of shock and anger. One of the disciples left the glass he was using in its position and turned his head towards Jesus.
Another disciple turned with stern brows to his friends while twisting his fingers. In addition, another disciple spread his hands open to depict the palm, shrugged his shoulders up his ears surprised. Moreover, another disciple spoke to his neighbor ear and as the neighbor listen to him. The neighbor turned toward his fried to lend him an ear. Further another disciple placed his hands on the table and stared. The other blew his mouthful. Additionally, another disciple leaned forward to see Jesus as he shaded his eyes with his hand. Another disciple drew back behind the disciple who leaned forward. The disciple saw Jesus between the wall and the disciple leaning forward (Da Vinci 664-669).
The Essay on Vinci Leonardo Painting One
MARCH 11, 2002 LEONARDO DA VINCI One of the greatest artists ever lived was also one of the worlds inventive geniuses-the Italian, Leonardo DA vinci. He was born in the small village of Vinci in Tuscany during the renaissance, a period a reawakening of interest in art, literature, and culture. Leonardo was interested in a wide range of subjects. He kept notebooks in which he asked many questions, ...
Leonardo has expressed the emotions of the mind well. Apart from showing the dramatic reaction, he has also shown a sense of order. He also arranged the disciples and Jesus well to convey the message to the viewers. According to the picture, Jesus is at the center and this makes Jesus the focal point. Also, Jesus head is the vanishing point where the lines of perspective projection of the architectural setting meet. The lighting and angles attract Jesus attention as Leonardo has situated the head at the vanishing point for the perspective lines. The viewer can easily see each component of the paintings direct interest to the middle of the composition. Thus, the technical perspective is the best example of point perspective created (Da Vinci 664-669).
The apostles have been arranged around Jesus in 4 groups of 3. The apostles are united by their gesture and posture. Leonardo placed Judas at the opposite side of the table to separate him separated from other disciples. However, Leonardo uses Judas shadow face to separate him from other disciples. Leonardo ensures Judas leans back into the shadow.
Most of the paintings have placed Judas separately from other disciples, and this makes his role of a deceiver seem obvious. The viewer is able to identify Judas and understand his role. On the other hand, Leonard has not separated Jesus from other disciples to avoid making his role obvious. This has made the Last Supper a masterpiece. The inclusion of Judas in the group forces the viewers to look through the painting and each character. This enhances the notion that every disciple questioned himself when Jesus announced that one of the disciples would betray him (Da Vinci 664-669).
In addition, Leonardo has managed to show human emotions in the painting. Though painters have painted many paintings on the Last Supper before, the painter has not shown human emotions in their paintings. The disciples do not depict human emotions. However, Leonardo painted the painting well to ensure the disciples act like real people. The disciples show emotions identified with human beings (Da Vinci 664-669).

Leonard used a different method instead of the convectional fresco method because of various reasons. Leonard used another method because the fresco method required the painter to complete the painting quickly. Also, the painter worked continuously. However, Leonard did not want to complete the painting quickly or work continuously.
Leonardo wanted to take his time and achieve his dreams without restriction of time. He painted the painting on a dry wall instead of wet plaster. Many people have criticized Leonardo method because the painting started to deteriorated few years after completion. Leonardo’s paintings are timeless and long-term, but the Last Supper is not. The painting began to chip away during the 16th century. The painting has been renovated several times to conserve it. Though many people have criticized him for the poor method, the Last Supper will remain as one of the best masterpieces (Da Vinci 664-669).
