It is amazing to me how the beach can make me feel like a kid again. The sun shining as it rises from the east, making everything look crisp and new. The smell of the salt air and the sound of waves thundering against the cool sand, yes, this is one of my favorite places to be. It can be relaxing and soothing to the soul. Newport Oregon is where I grew up and has some of the most amazing beaches. Rocky shores, historical lighthouses and glorious sunsets are just some of the extraordinary sights.
I grew up in Newport Oregon and spent almost every day running along the surf. The cool sand on bare feet feels as if you are walking on silk. Vibrant colored seashells lay all over the glittering sand and you can spend hours looking for the perfect one. Lively animated tide pools gather unique creatures clinging to their rocks. Emerald sea anemones with their vast soft arms stretched upward are a particular favorite. A gentle touch and they curl up into a tight ball. Small silver fish dart about waiting for the tide to return, setting them free into the vast ocean. Time tends to slip away as you immerse yourself in the flora and fauna of coastal life.
Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is a popular tourist attraction, standing in Yaquina park looking over Newport bay and the untamed Pacific Ocean. It has drawn much attention with its haunting past that has brought to attention with the publication of “The Haunted Lighthouse,” (1899) issue of Pacific Monthly. Though Fictional, the story of a little girl named Muriel Trevenard, who mysteriously vanishes in the lighthouse after returning to find her handkerchief has made many believe it is haunted.
