Artist’s Statement I chose “A Man Who Had No Eyes” to illstrate because the cover of the short story was very eye-catching. The cover is black and white with an old man holding a cane and a hat. He looks very sad and helpless and the background is very dark and gloomy. The whole atmosphere of the picture made me wonder what happened to this old man. This is the reason why I chose this story. The part that my graphic novel adaptation wanted to show was the difference between Mr. Parsons and Mr. Markward. The way they deal with life is blind yet still manages to become a sucessful person.
On the other hand, Mr. Markward does not work hard and becomes a beggar. In addition, he lies to people about what happened to him in the past. The tone and the mood I wanted to communicate is sadness. The story I chose for my graphic novel adaptation is a short story called “A Man Who Had No Eyes” by Mackinlay Kanor. This story is about two gentlement who experienced a serious accident in the past and how they deal with it differently. The reason I chose this story because I was impressed by the cover. An old man with no emotion showing on his face appears to be begging for money.
This image makes me want to know what happened to this old man. According to this srory, the beggar, Mr. Markward, appoachs Mr. Parsons on the street. Mr. Parsons feel sorry for him. Mr. Markward is trying to sell the lighter to Mr. Parsons and Mr. Parsons finally bought it. Than Mr. Markward doesn’t want Mr. Parsons to go because he wants more money from him. Mr. Markward starts telling his story from the past and how he ended up blind. Apparently Mr. Markward lost his eyesight in the chemical explosion.
The Essay on Women’s Inferiority to Men in Their Eyes Were Watching God
Women’s Inferiority to Men in Their Eyes Were Watching God In Their Eyes Were Watching God, different themes portray women’s inferiority to men. In other words, various events in the book mostly relate to how men are superior to women. Throughout the novel, men treat women like objects, oppress women, provoke women, and silence women. All four actions conclude that the males are stronger than the ...
When the accident occurred he was trying to run away, but someone behind him grabbed his leg and hauled him back and climbed over him. That is the reason why he lost his eyesight. However, Mr. Parsons does not agree with Mr. Markward story. Mr. Markward is really the one who grabbed and hauled someone back. The reason why Mr. Parson knows because he was the one being pulled and grabbed by Mr. Markward that day. Then Mr. Markward become very angry and yelled at Mr. Parsons because he thinks Mr. Parsons laughed at him for being blind. At the end Mr. Parsons told him that he was blind too.
The part of the story I wish to show is the difference between the two main characters, Mr. Parsons and Mr. Markward. They used to work together in the same chemical factory. One day there was an accident and both of them become blind. The way they deal with the accident were totally different. Mr. Markward chose to give up on his life after the accident and never took responsibility on what he has done in the past. At the end, he finds out that if only he had worked hard, he would have been sucessful just like Mr. Parsons. In the graphic novel I used lighter colours at first.
As the story went along and the atmosphere of the story becoming more serious and sad, I used darker colours to reflect the atmosphere mood change. For example on the front page I used a variety of colours as the story went along. I use dark brown. dark purple, dark green to demonstrate the conflict and I used dark red to show the serious conversation. Since the story already described excatly what Mr. Parsons is wearing, the only thing I got to choose was what Mr. Markward has wearing. I decided to give him a dark blue mixed with purple clothing for him to make him look like a begger.
