If I was offered to choose in favor of million dollars or knighthood, I would pick million dollars, because the concept of knighthood does not correspond to the objective reality anymore, while American currency still possesses buying power. We live in time when people are not being drawn to purely abstract concepts as much as they used to, even as recent as hundred years ago. The money represents an objective value, because it can be exchanged for goods and services. The concept of knighthood only represents a nostalgic value, because it is not associated with materialistic perception of the world. This concept simply does not correspond to the realities of post-Industrial era, which is why people who strive to acquire the status of knight, can rarely be described as such that are overburdened with intellect. As practice shows, only the individuals who have all their material needs satisfied, dream of becoming knighted.
With the advent of modern era, it became possible to buy the knighthood. Nowadays, it is often being awarded to the people of high social prominence, only to boost their ego even more. I am not at position of choosing in favor of knighthood, because I have more pressing needs. On the other hand, if I was given million dollars, I could buy myself a house, without having to become a slave to the bank that would provide me with the loan. Alternatively, I could use the money to buy things that I always wanted to have, while lacking the financial means to acquire them. As popular saying goes money cannot buy happiness, but it sure can make ones misery more enjoyable. In any case, the objective advantage of having million dollars in cash outweighs the imaginary pleasure of being given highly prestigious but meaningless status. The smartest way to deal with the issue would be accepting million dollars, investing it into a high-tech stock and making another few millions, within a matter of year.
