An abortion is the expulsion of a fetus voluntary or involuntary. There are different types of abortions .There are induced abortions, spontaneous abortions which can be considered to be an in-clinic abortion. There is also the abortion pill, which is considered to be medication abortions
The abortion pill is a medicine that ends an early pregnancy. The abortion pill can be used up to 9weeks after the first day of a woman’s last period. The name of the abortion pill is mifepristone. Mifepristone was also known as RU-486 when it was being developed. Planned Parenthood (2010) HYPERLINK “http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/abortion/abortion-pill-medicatithis type of abortion can be done for different reasons. Most women who became pregnant, as a result of a rape. As a result of incest or for personal reasons. The medication abortion includes 3 stages. the first stage is to have blood works done the blood work include the HCG testing and a possible ultrasound. this is to confirm the pregnancy. The HCG test is a Human chorionic gonadotropin. If these are negative it could be possible that it is too early to detect a pregnancy, or that there are no fetus meaning that the woman is not pregnant. After confirming a pregnancy and the woman is ready to proceed with the medication abortion, the pregnant woman will be given the abortion pill, at the health care provider’s office or clinic. The patient (pregnant woman) should also be given some type of antibiotic that should be taken after the abortion pill as prophalatyic.
The first abortion pill works by blocking progesterone (hormone) Without progesterone the lining of the uterus break down which will prevent the fetus from developing. The second step of the medication abortion is taking a second pill known as Misoprostal , this pill can be taken up to 72 hours after the first pill .It can be taken right after the first pill, but should not be taken later than 72 hours after the first pill. Misoprostal causes the uterus to empty. During this stage the pregnant woman should expect to have cramping, heaving bleeding with large blood clots or tissue, dizzyness, diarrhea, nauseau and vomiting, mild fever and chills. this should last for a few hours. four to five hours after taking the pill Misoprostal. The health care provider and the patient should also choose the time and place. for the abortion in order to prevent complications. It is normal for small amounts of vaginal bleeding or spotting to occur for up to 4 weeks after the abortion process. The third stage of the abortion process is the Follow-up. This is where the patient should be sure to follow up with her health care provider to ensure the pregnancy has ended. The patient will then be subjected to another ultrasound and another blood test. If for some reason the pregnancy was not ended an aspiration abortion will be necessary. The medication abortion is very effective .Statics shown that 97% out of every 100% is effective. The medication abortion pill is available at most planned parenthood centers at a cost ranging from $350- $650. This can only be prescribed under the direction of your doctor. Surgical Abortions, this usually depends on how far along is the pregnancy and the size of the pregnancy. These include Suction Aspiration; Dilation and Curettage; Dilation and Evacuation; Salt poisoning: Prostaglandin Chemical Abortion; the Hysterectomy and Caesarean Section and The Partial-Birth.
Suction Aspiration is most common abortion during the first 12 weeks of an unwanted pregnancy. This procedure is done with local or general anesthesia depending on the cost and the health care provider. After the cervix is dilated a suction curette attached to a very powerful vacuum suction is inserted into the womb. The vacuum then tears the fetus and the placenta into small pieces which are sucked into the vacuum container and discarded. Abortion methods (1997-2010)
Dilation and Curettage, this is the insertion of a hooked shaped knife that cuts the fetus into small pieces, and then the pieces are scraped out through the cervix and discarded. The Dilation and Evacuation method is done up until the 18th week of pregnancy. This is where the fetus is completely dismembered by inserting a pair of forceps into the womb and constantly twisting and tearing the bones of the fetus .The womb is then scraped through the cervix. and the contents discarded. Abortion methods (1997-2010).
Salt Poisoning or the Saline Injection is usually done after 16weeks of pregnancy, when enough fluids are accumulated. in the womb. This is where a huge needle is used to inject a strong solution of salt into the baby’s sack, via the mother’s abdomen. With this method it is very corrosive causing the baby’s outer layer skin to burn off. The baby swallows this fluid and is poisoned by it. this method causes the death of the baby within 60mins. within 24 hours after the salt poisoning labor will set in, the mother will then give birth to a still born baby or a dying baby. If the baby is not dead the baby is usually left unattended and eventually dies. In very rare cases the baby may live and may eventually adopted. Abortion methods (1997-2010).
Prostaglandin Chemical Abortion, this is done at 6months of pregnancy .Chemicals developed by the Upjohn Pharmaceutical Co. This causes the uterus to contract more violent than normal, natural contractions pushing out the well developed baby. In most cases the unborn baby is killed before being born. Abortion methods (1997-2010).
Hysterectomy or Caesarean Section, this is mainly in the last three months of pregnancy, where by the womb is entered by surgery. This is similar to a Caesarean delivery except that the umbilical cord is usually cut while the baby is still in the womb, the oxygen supply ceases causing the baby to suffocate. Abortion methods (1997-2010).
Partial-Birth Abortion ,this is done after 30 weeks of pregnancy; There are five steps to a partial abortion ,these include guided by ultrasound ,where the abortionist grabs the unborn baby by the legs with forceps pulling the legs through the birth canal, the entire baby except for the head is delivered .The abortionist then jams a scissors into the unborn baby’s skull .the scissors are the open to enlarge the skull then the scissors are removed and a suction catheter is then inserted to suck the unborn child brain causing the brain to collapse. The dead baby is then delivered and discarded. Abortion methods (1997-2010).
