The experience of watching a movie is like living all our desires, expectations, emotions and ambitions that are suppressed in the subconscious mind. Human being suppresses his feelings of anger, rage, violence and physical desires with the fear of getting punished by the law and the society. All these emotional and physical suppressions need some sort of an outlet to lead a happy and healthy life. People find an outlet to their suppressed desires through the actors who play a role of good guy, who beat the villain to death, becomes a messiah to people who are weak and seems to be doing everything with great expertise.
The audience, while watching a movie gets so engrossed in the roles that the actors play in the movies, that they forget themselves and start identifying with the actors on the screen. As Laura Mulvey said in her essay “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema”, the darkness in the movie hall make people forget their identities and their sorrows for a time being and live their dreams through their heroes ( Merck, 1992, p.25).
This helps them to heal their sadness and experience their desire for sexual, mental and social power through the actors. No other public figure can fight a villain, punch the bad guy or get romantically involved with a beautiful girl or a handsome man the way the actors do on the screen. Only actors, through their roles in movies, help people experience an outlet to their frustrations and experience the fulfillment of emotions and dreams that are stored in the subconscious mind.
The Essay on Experience People Percy Experiences
"The Loss of the Creature," by Walker Percy is a short and informative piece that mostly has to do with people's personal experiences and the ways that people react to their experiences. Percy uses several examples to further explain the ways that different experiences can be perceived by different people. Although many people try to achieve maximum intensity through each experience, it is often ...
Not only that, but in their real lives too, actors look the way people want to look, they live the lifestyle that people want to live and own all the material possessions that people dream of owning and hence actors are so loved and admired by people. So, when Jeremy Brett says that “ we cannot do without actors. Because without them, we would not know ourselves”, what he means is that actors make us realize our hidden subconscious desires through their roles and that is how we come face to face with our reality. Hence, there is a strong truth in Jeremy Brett’s opinion.
