Addiction is a problem that affects many people and not only those who are addicted to a substance but also the friends and family of the person that abuses the particular substance. Because of this there are lessons that we all can learn when analysing addiction and reasons why people are addicted to particular substances and ways in which the abusers end up kicking the habit.
Crazy/beautiful starring Kirsten Dunst and Jay Hernandez is a movie that portrays such an addiction. Dunst plays Nicole a troubled daughter of a wealthy congressman she suffers from depression (after her mother took her own life when Nicole was only 12 years old). Hernandez plays her love interest Carlos and the person that brought her out of her destructive shell. The love shown to Nicole from Carlos and her father were the treatment that she needed to fight her addiction to drugs and alcohol.
The addiction portrayed was Nicole’s addiction to alcohol and a partying lifestyle where she regularly gets very drunk and sometimes even passes out. The introduction of a stable boyfriend temporarily hides this destructive behaviour but when Nicole’s father urges Carlos stay away from his daughter, as her behaviour would end up ruining all the hard work he had put in his education thus far. At this point in the movie Nichole’s behaviour spiralled out of control.

Nicole’s destructive behaviour and addiction caused many problems for her in many areas of her life including education and legal factors to name a few. Throughout the film she was seen as one to regularly skip class and because of her addiction ending up missing sitting her mid-term exams.
Throughout the movie there were many instances where Nicole got in trouble with the police and law enforcement figures. The film opens with Nicole cleaning up the local beach doing service to the community after she was caught driving under the influence of alcohol. After Carlos had ended the relationship with Nicole – due in part to Nicole’s fathers influence- her destructive behaviour resurfaced. She attended a party and ended up passing out and Carlos picked her up but on the way home was pulled over by the police. Again this is another instance where Nicole’s addiction had got her in trouble with the police and at this point she is not only hurting herself but hurting people that love and care for her.
It was Nicole’s family that were most affected by the addiction besides Nicole. It was Nicole’s addiction that caused a problem in the family dynamics. In the movie we see the arguments that Nicole’s father has with his new wife over Nicole’s behaviour. It is the family that want to put Nicole in a treatment facility after a recent episode to combat her addiction and that includes her stepmother Courtney (who in part wants to protect her daughter but in part who doesn’t really like Nicole and wants to find any excuse to get rid of her).
“She’s going to that school in Utah,’’ it is this point in the film that Nicole wants to fix her addiction and fix up her relationship with her father (family).
But Courtney will not take a bar of it “Nicole, I just don’t think I can live with you.’’
However, in the end is the love from her father that will be the clincher that makes her better and to combat her addiction. It is in these final scenes that we see how much Nicole craves to be loved “I know I’m a mess…and I’d probably send me away too’’, “I know I’m not easy to love but can you try anyway.’’ It is powerful to see how much love her father has for Nicole and how much he is willing to sacrifice his marriage for the love of his daughter and the want to keep her at home rather than sending her away to “boot camp’’.
The Essay on Love Imogen College Movie
Down To Who? Does the magic of young love ever stand a chance? Down to You tells the story of two college students who fall madly in love with one another after meeting in a crowded, college bar. Their ...
Throughout the movie we have seen how powerful the relationship between Nicole and Carlos is. Despite her self-destructive behaviour Carlos continued to stand by Nicole even after her father told him to stay away from her and that she would end up ruining everything he had worked so hard for in the past coming years in his future career as a pilot.
A lesson can be learned here with regard to addiction that is not always the drugs and treatment that can help with an addiction but being around people who love you and who are willing to help you fight it. In the final scene in the movie we hear Nicole speak of this revelation, “there are millions of people out there but in the end there is only one.’’ It is here that as an audience that we realize the affect that one person can have on making the other persons life all the better and in this case it was Carlos that made Nicole’s life happy and worth living to the fullest.
In conclusion, it is the constant love from her father and from Carlos that breaks the addiction. She was able to beat the addiction and lead a happy life once she knew how much the people who she cared about most loved her.
