Summary: The proliferation of Internet technologies has both advantages and disadvantages. The capabilities for information retreival and communication are infinite, but children can be exposed to illicit material, individual privacy is threatened and it’s a virtual medium rather than a physical one.
Everywhere you look in today’s society, the internet is a major part of everyone’s life. Whether its school, business, personal life, or entertainment, the internet has influenced us immensely. When the word internet is heard, one has an image of what it represents, but what really is the internet? According to Oxford Dictionary, the internet is: “a system of connected computers that allows computer users around the world to exchange information.” Currently, about one third of the world has access to the internet. Personally, I have accepted the invention of the internet to be a world revolution. I would define the internet to be an exceptional learning and entertainment tool that can be used in a variety of ways to enhance a user’s ability to gather information. Although the internet is very beneficial to society, one has to keep in mind that the internet can harm its users just as quickly as it can help them. Some advantages of the internet are that it is easily accessible, it provides easy and rapid communication, it has boosted the world’s economy over night, and it has made education very versatile. Disadvantages include that it provides access to information that is restricted to young users, it can be very slow at times, it is virtual, and while benefiting commerce, it brings damage to certain types of industries.

Advantages
The plus points of the internet are infinite. First of all, the internet is easily accessible from anywhere, which means that a person does not have to be at a certain location to access the internet. Connection to the internet is easy. Any computer anywhere can log on to the internet as long as it is connected to a phone line or satellite. Whether you are in a jungle with a laptop or an office with a PC, there is no difference in the locations. Anyone anywhere can log on. Easy accessibility is a major cause of its worldwide use. Next, the internet has made communication so easy that is unbelievable. Instead of paying long phone bills one after another, a person can log onto the internet and, by using one local phone call, can talk away for hours. The internet also gives its user access to additional ways of communication. One does not necessarily have to “talk” through the internet. For example, a person is not always reachable thorough the phone. The internet provides various other ways of communication such as emailing, chatting, and sending sms. E-mailing ensures the user that the person receiving the mail will eventually get the message. Users can electronically send mail to people with an online mailbox, simply by typing the message and sending it by the click of a button.
This prevents the user from making countless calls just to reach a person. Two minutes to send e-mail to someone on the other side of the world is way faster than a week or more through the regular mail. Chatting allows the user to speak with many people simultaneously. While on the phone line, only one call can be taken at once. Whereas on cell phones, sending sms requires money, on the internet, the user can send infinite sms without the use of a single penny. Another advantage is that the internet has boosted the world’s economy to an unimaginable extent. In places where the internet is routinely used, it makes up almost half of the business done in that country. Customers just find it easier to get on the internet and search for and order their needed item, rather than walking the whole over and over again through the market or mall to find the perfect item and reasonable price. It saves time and effort. Because the customer has to put in less effort to shop, it convinces them to shop more often, consequently, bringing up sales. It has made business global. A person in Japan now has access the market in Europe and through e-commerce can order anything in the European market and have it delivered to their doorstep. Lastly the internet has changed the way that education is brought to the student. By using the internet, Education has been redefined. For example, 15 years ago, people would spend hours and hours in the library to search for a topic, but now though the internet, with one click all the information is immediately brought to the screen. In some places, a student does not physically have to be in the classroom to attend class. The student can just go online, access the network and “attend” class and obtain the same information sitting miles away from the classroom.

Disadvantages
c First of all, young users that use the internet may not be aware of the illicit content available on the internet that is not restricted to them, but they can easily stumble upon that content and not be aware of it. Users who have access to the internet have access to all kinds of information, even if that information is harmful to them. A negative point about the internet is that it does not restrict information. Obscene material, pornography, adult information are just a few examples of the damage done via the Internet to the minds of young adolescent children.
Secondly, there are only certain places where the internet is used at high-speed. There are many places in the world where the internet is very slow, and using high-speed internet comes at a cost to them. Thus, this discourages users to use the internet. When the transmission of data is so slowly, it is just easier to pick up the phone and make a call instead of waiting for a person’s voice to reach you. It becomes frustrating for the user and in that frustration the user goes out and just chooses the alternate path. Another negative point is that the internet is virtual. The user can not grab what is on their screen. Anything existing on the network does not have physical matter. When a person orders something on the internet, they cannot see it or touch it until it is ordered to their house. And that is up to the buyers luck that what they ordered, which is now theirs, is what they wanted or perceived the thing to be like. Lastly, while bringing in huge amounts of profit to the e-market, it also hurts certain industries. Piracy is a major problem on the internet. It promotes piracy enormously. The users have access to files on the internet, which can include songs, videos, and movies, anything that is copyrighted material. This hurts the entertainment industry that provides the same songs, videos and movies in the market for a price. Users, obviously are encouraged just to go online and get a copy of the shared material and view it or listen to it on the computer rather than going out and buying it for a price in the real market.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the internet is a very powerful tool that when used properly can benefit a person immensely. In my opinion the Internet is very resourceful. On the other hand, when used in a negative way, it can be very dangerous and can cause damage to its user. I believe that the internet brings the world at our fingertips. I think that Internet has redefined the way people obtain information. It has not only redefined the way we obtain information but also the way we transmit it. I think the advantages of the internet which are that it is easily accessible, provides easy and rapid communication, it has boosted the world’s economy over night, and it has made education very versatile over come the disadvantages of using the internet which are that it provides access to information that is restricted to young users, it can be very slow at times, it is virtual, and while benefiting commerce, it brings damage to certain types of industries. In a lump sum, the internet will prove beneficial in the future and it is a new revolution to all of mankind. It has made things possible that were unimaginable ten years ago. In four years, it has reached fifty million people. No wonder where it will take us in the years to come. The Internet’s extreme rate of growth will continue while we have no idea where it will take us.
