The European Union purpose is to eliminate barriers for the movement of materials, labor and goods on the continent. This has its advantages and disadvantages for the member state. Some claim there are more advantages than disadvantages, according to the Academic Study in the UK EU has created a more peaceful and stable way of market. The EU was created after the second world war, the plan was to work with economically independent countries thus avoid conflict. The common currency is the euro, this union has developed into a huge market. This organization isn’t just an economic union, it has become so much more, from environmental needs to development aid.
Disadvantages of EU membership would be that there are countries not able to be involved because some of the laws made by the EU are not acceptable by all countries. Member nations cannot make laws to change this either because EU has made laws on that as well. What this means is that because of laws made by the EU many countries can not participate. Another disadvantage would be that financially there has been several difficulties. Some states within member nations might need help from surrounding states to afford this. Often other member nations have to pool together which requires more tax dollars. The issue of financials also connects to the issue of cost, the EU costs more than it gives back. According to the Bruges an anti-European group say that the cost per head of the EU membership is 873 euros, however the Foreign and Commonwealth office claim that the cost is only 300 euros per head.

To think that those populations will all be increasing by 70 million in 10 years seems quite dramatic. That will change many things for the UK in the next decade such as an increase in price of living, more expensive homes and congestion on roads. Finally, one last disadvantage would be that by being a member of the EU there is much more bureaucracy and less democracy. This disadvantage could also be advantage depending on opinion. Some prefer for states to have more power over the general government.
Now time for the advantages, based on the research it seems as though there are more advantages than disadvantages proving that being a member of EU is beneficial. The EU allows much more political and economic freedoms for their members. The EU has provided a single market, this means that businesses in EU member states have to lower their prices for their products to become more competitive. The single market makes it much easier and cheaper to do business with in other EU countries. There is no custom tax on goods going between member states.
Also the EU has provided jobs to their members. It is estimated that 3.5 million British jobs are dependent on the membership Britain has with the EU. There is also protection for the workers. The European Working Time Directive was designed to protect workers from exploitation by employers. There are regulations made on how many breaks each employee gets, how many holidays they are entitled to each year and it also limits employees being compelled to work 48 hours a week. By working together EU member countries can ensure their needs are met, and their voices are heard. Internationally they will be taken more seriously, when the EU speaks it represents about 400 million people.

Being an EU member has proven to have more advantages than disadvantages, this shows that being a member is beneficial and a smart decision. This helps to solve problems economically, politically, socially and educationally. There is no process for those who want to study in another country, there is no divide. At this point in time there are 28 members in the EU, altogether that is 508,077,900 people joined together by one common membership. The EU is an organization that is positively changing the world, members are receiving more advantages than disadvantages in my opinion.
