The term affirmative action is used to refer to the rules and policies that are intended to alleviate and to boost opportunities for the minority and the discriminated groups. These opportunities involve providing access to education and employment mostly to women and the minority groups.
The motivational role to the establishment of affirmative action was majorly to address the past and the current cases of discrimination targeted to certain groups of people. These cases of discrimination have been regarded as unjust by various human rights organization and legislative groups. It also serves the purpose of ensuring that women and the minority groups are given equal opportunities as the rest in terms of recruitment and treatment provided to them by the public institutions and organizations. This is achieved by giving preference of various opportunities to women and the marginalized groups.
Though affirmative action’s initial target was to address the rights of blacks and the minority groups, the program has been accused of not actually benefiting the targeted group. Instead of addressing issues facing the lower-class minorities, the program is majorly focusing on the middle and the upper-class minorities.
This does not help the poor in any way because most of them come from the lower-class minority group. Further opposition have emerged in regard to the system in that, it is no longer regarded as only class based but also race and gender based. This is because, the system has been found out to increase racial tension and only benefit the minority group including those who are privileged in this group at the expense of the lower-class whites in the majority group. It has also been found out that most people in the minority group identify themselves as poor even if they are not.

Studies have indicated that white women have benefited tremendously since the implementation of affirmative action as compared to the rest of the minority groups.
