Equality is one of the basic principles the United States is found on. In the Declaration of Independence it states “All Men are Created Equal.” Through out history you would not figure that that statement was held to be true. The United States has a very ugly past when it comes to the topic of equality. The most notable act of inequality was definitely slavery and the segregation laws passed by government. Black people faced discrimination from the start and are still facing it today. Other incidents were the use of Asians to build railroads, and the Japanese we imprisoned during World War Two. In the United States minorities have had a harder time than white males. In counter action for these hardships affirmative action laws were passed. Affirmative action laws are set in place to increase opportunities for minorities by favoring them in hiring and promotion, college admissions, and the awarding of government contracts. Affirmative action is a very controversial topic and is plagued with many problems. The support for Affirmative action is weak and filled with many contradictions. Affirmative action is an unfair policy and should be ruled unconstitutional.
Affirmative action is believed to create diversity in the many institution which it is applied to, especially institutions of higher education. Diversity is important in an institution. It creates better people due to the fact that the miss beliefs of other cultures can be fixed through interaction between the cultures. It also helps in classrooms because the range of beliefs will be broader giving the student a broader mind. It is also believed that students in a diverse institution have the most engagement in college civic activities and also have stronger racial interactions years after attending such an institution. Diversity creates better people because of the broad spectrum to which they learn from and interact. An example of this would be a student who comes from an all white community. This student has no idea of the Black culture or any people with in it. When he goes to college and is put in a classroom with several Black students he has time to learn and better understand what he has not known before. For this reason and many other situations like it, proponents of affirmative action believe it helps to diversify institutions of higher learning, business, and government.

Equality is another purpose of affirmative action. Slavery and other hardships placed among minorities have placed them at a disadvantage. This is where affirmative action steps into correct the past and present wrongs. In higher education affirmative action is set in place to give preference to Black, Latino, Asian, and Native Americans. When these students apply to a university the have preference over white students who are equally or a little more qualified. This is to help them because they have disadvantages in education and their past that white students do not face. In the work place it is set in place to stop discrimination and to allow minorities a chance to get jobs that they could not get before. Proponents of affirmative action believe it is a big enforcer of equality.
Is it true that affirmative action is really set up for the reasons of diversity. Affirmative action is setup to allow only Black, Latino, Asian, and Native Americans. If affirmative action was setup to create diversity then why is it setup for such a few groups. Affirmative action is not used for some people who are split White and Latino or other interracial off springs. Why are these people left out if it creates diversity. For the greatest diversity you would have to include all minorities in the laws for affirmative action. Diversity is a good cause, but comes up short as a support for affirmative action.

Equality is far different from affirmative action. How is it equal to give someone an unfair advantage over another. The reasons for this are because they have had an unfair start in the world. How is it decided who has a fair start. Blacks have had a hard time in the United States, but many other White people have had times just as rough. Some Minorities are as well off as most white people today. So who decides who should get the advantage. An example of this would be a white student who grew up in Center City Philadelphia applied to Drexel, a college in the city. This student had a hard time growing up one the streets with just his mother. He had hard time getting an education in the schools because the education is not the best. He is turned down because a minority student had preference over him. Now this minority student was from a good family and was raised in the suburbs. His family was well off and he received a great education from a good school district. Now does this minority deserve this spot on enrollment. No, of course he does not. The non-minority student who does have the real disadvantage in this world deserves it. This example clearly states how affirmative action is not always creating equality. It is actually creating reverse discrimination. It is actually discriminating against the people who are believed to discriminate against minorities. How does hurting another group help another. Equality in racial terms requires that people treat each other the same without regards to their race or ethnic background. By using affirmative action as the reason for appointing positions, contradicts the idea of being Color Blind. This is in direct contradiction with idea of being racially equal. How can racial harmony be achieved if we continue to uphold the idea of racial discrimination? Equality is not the created by affirmative action.

I believe that affirmative action may have been necessary in the beginning when it was first instated. With racial equality closer than ever before is not about time that we choose on merit based system and not a quota based system. I as an individual have no way directly hurt or created inequality to minorities, so why is it that I am being hurt by affirmative action. I believe completely in equality. That is why I feel that affirmative action is not fair. It creates and inequality among the races. It clearly shows that we believe on race to be weaker than another. This is shown by the need to give aid to the minority. Normally aid is giving to sick and weak individuals. Affirmative action creates a sense of a weaker race. Affirmative action creates inequality and lacks in strengthening diversity. I feel affirmative action should be done away with completely.
