Ageism is considered or defined as discrimination of someone based off of their age. Ageism has an influence on society because it has a negative impact on people that are older due to misconceptions. Being that many individuals that are older are just as capable and healthy as a younger person this is a misconception and people shouldn’t be judged based off of this. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act prohibits discrimination againast potential employee due to their age. This prohibits employees from setting an age limit on who is and is not eligible for obtaining employement with a particular organization. The ADEA addresses this issue by setting a standard for employers to abide by and the level of respect that should be shown to potential employees. This act gives people of all ages to obtain employement with each agency without age being a factor even if they are only hired part time or only to perform certain task they are not and cannot be denied employement entirely for this reason. In the face of rising productivity and affluence, older workers find themselves disadvantaged in their efforts to retain employment, and especially to regain employment when displaced from jobs.By this law being in place seniors don’t feel as though they are at a disadvantage due to their age despite their capabilities as an employee. Setting limits on a age for employement is not on a form of discrimination but it is unfair and in some cases a misconception to the employee that still need to earn a living. The numbers of the aging population are expected to rise in the future. In the year of 2009 the number of people that were 65 years an dolder were 39.6 million. By the year of 2030 it is estimated to be 72.1 million older persons which is twice the number of living people this age in the year of 2000. People are living longer than what they use to many years ago which is having an impact on many services that are made available to seniors and issues pertaining to their retirement as well as the age that they can retire without being penalized. The aging population is affected by this issue because seniors will have to work longer in order to receive retirement benefits because the age of retirement will increase. People will have to find other means of income if the would like to retirement earlier than the retirement age without being penalized financially. This may have an impact on families due to the financial concern and strain of ensuring that their loved ones are provided for and have the neccesities in the event that they are forced to retire early.
