African- American Men’s Health Study (AAMHS) An HIV prevention program for African- American gay and bisexual men From November 1989 until 1991, AAMHS recruited 318 self-identified gay and bisexual AA men. The average age was 31 with majority being single. Out of these 318 men, 52% engaged in unprotected anal intercourse in the past 6 months; 38% engaged in sex for pay sometime in their life; and 25% have not been tested for the virus. This was designed to help reduce the risk of becoming infected with the HIV virus. Two workshops were set up and presented in either one or three sessions. The workshops were developed based on extensive focus group interviews with the AA gay men in San Fran and Oakland CA.
These men were randomized into three groups; triple session intervention, single session intervention and wait-list control. We will attempt to replicate what was done for these men. They watched a movie (watch the movie) They had AIDS risk education where two games were played (play the games) They were taught assertive training, where it is okay to ask people where they have been and with whom, and to reject them if necessary. And the last one was behavioral commitment, which allowed the participants to share and strategies they had for risk reduction (ask anyone if they have any strategies) AA comprises 33% of all diagnosed AIDS cases in the US, yet they only represent 11% of the general population. The proportion of AIDS cases among AA attributed to male homosexual and bisexual activity, 36%, which is almost equal to that attributed to injection drug use, 38%.
