The role of an aircraft technical therefore is to make sure that there is smooth running of aircraft systems by offering solutions to various problems and by designing strategies on how to prevent some which can result in reduced productivity. Technical advisers are suppose to perform technical reviews on aviation activities, provide technical advice on aviation contracts meant for development, provide needed information about the safety reviews in liaison with the safety department, and investigate accidents if they occur, providing possible causes and proposed solutions.
He acts as an expert on aircraft operations. Other roles of a technical adviser includes ensuring that the relationship between the local clients and the aircraft department is maintained, assessing aircraft operations by performing audits, conducting inspections on airfield, helideck and helipad and guiding the aircraft company on client company issues. A technical adviser is therefore required to have knowledge on aircraft industry regulations, the standards required, safety standards, general knowledge on aircraft and aviation and some experience which help in decision making (Muller, 2007) .

Evaluation of aircraft performance: This is aimed at finding out the level of aircraft productivity depending on the type of aircraft and the role it plays. It is to find out the aircraft’s ability to accomplish the missions it is designed for. Aircrafts are designed differently, for example there are those meant for war so require some specific equipments that others do not require. Evaluation reveals the characteristics of an aircraft and its contribution to the air power in case of war jets and to customer satisfaction in case of business.
There are steps though to be followed in evaluating the performance making evaluators work easy. The performance of an aircraft has to be estimated, which has the aim of placing it into a certain category of say, high speed and any other depending on the evaluation aim. A technical adviser acts on the information given to him indicating the aim of evaluation of performance so has to use the programs steps required for performance evaluation to be able to give reliable recommendations. The programs are designed differently depending on the type of aircraft being evaluated.
They are; gliders evaluation performance programs, evaluation programs for jet propellers and small aircrafts, turboprop’s evaluation performance programs, fighter aircrafts evaluation programs and many others. Given the duty, a technical adviser has to select the relevant type of program to assist him do his job. There are other types of programs though with different names provided by different companies.
Each program gives the steps towards evaluation of performance by outlining the point performance requirements and steps, the mission performance, the minimum system requirements, the mission optimizers and the standard performance steps. Accident and incident investigations: Technical advisers should be able to know the specific requirements for every type of aircraft or can select a specific type and study it so that he provides the required services to ensure safety. Actually it is so hard to study and know everything since each type of aircraft have different specifications and requirements to maintain safety and perform its function.
It is not specified though that a technical adviser has to know specific needs of specific aircrafts and some of them have vast knowledge on so many types of aircrafts. The role in investigating accidents and incidents helps an aircraft company to maintain good relations with clients and makes the clients and the public as a whole have confidence in the company. It involves investigating the occurrence of an accident due to; plain crash, fire or collision with other plains, aircraft causing damage to property or death and injuries to persons or disappearance of people on board.
The technical adviser is the one in charge though should appoint an investigator in charge to report to him the findings. Investigation is suppose to be coordinated with the police but this again depend on the type of company. After receiving the report a technical adviser should be able to come up with the real cause of the problem and give the recommended possible solutions especially if it is due to aircraft malfunction (Muller, 2007).
Goal setting: Why would a technical adviser be hired? There are different reasons for company needs for a technical adviser, but the main aim is to make good sales. Take for example fight jets, although they are meant for fighting, it would not be used for that purpose if it was inefficient. Technical advisers give the necessary steps towards production of a quality product. Goal setting therefore involves making plans on how to accomplish a mission and a technical adviser is required to give directions on what is to be done.
A company can want to improve the kind of jets they have to higher speed ones than the original jets, since a technical adviser has the vast knowledge of if it can happen or not, if it will be of benefit or not and even how to accomplish that, he has to take responsibility over that.
