Airport security involves all the techniques and the methods that are used to guard airports as well as aircrafts from any acts of crime. Due to the fact that airports are active at any point of the day and also due to the large populations that are involved in various activities in the airports there is need to have an effective airport security system especially in international airports. Due to the large numbers of people that pass through airports terrorists take this advantage and therefore airports have a very high risk to terrorist attacks. Airport security operator provides defense to the people and the aircrafts in airports by making attempts to stop the potential attackers from bringing weapons or any other dangerous or prohibited materials into the airport. MOST LIKELY FORM OF TERRORIST ATTACK ON U.S. AVIATION Since the September 11, 2001 bombing of the United State, the country has increased its security measures in the airports. Although there are many measures that have been put up to counter any acts of terrorism the aviation sector is still at the risk of being attacked by terrorists. The most threatening act of terrorism that faces the United States aviation sector is the threat of liquid explosives in the airports. The airport security personnel do not have the capability of detecting liquid explosives at the check points and therefore terrorists can use this as a chance of performing terrorist activities in the country. Due to the current advancement in technology there have been very many liquid explosives that have been developed. Some of the liquid explosives developed are developed for other purposes but the terrorists use them as explosives (Hitmar and Andrey, 2008).
Liquid explosives pose a very great threat to the U.S aviation sector because they are similar to solid explosives in terms of the damages that they can cause but on the other hand due to their physical states they have some unique properties that make them not to be easily detected as the solid explosives. There have been several cases of misuse of liquid explosives in connection with terrorist activities and these has resulted to several measures being put in the civil aviation industry to counter this form of terrorist activities. The other reason why liquid explosives pose a very huge threat to our aviation industry is that there are no rules restricting passengers in planes from carrying liquids. This then gives the terrorists a chance to carry explosives in form of liquids. According to a security report released by security infowatch.com there is a possibility of detonating explosives aboard the UK and US paleness the explosives have been identified to be of liquid form. The report indicated that the terrorist had planned to hide the explosive liquid inside a sports drink container and therefore it may be difficult for airport security personnel to suspect that the container is loaded with an explosive liquid (Geoff Kohl, 2009).
Airport security personnel are faced with a problem of detecting the current liquid explosives at the check point because of the means used to scan people and baggage at the check point. The whole body scanners make use of millimeter wave so as to detect any threat that may be concealed within the body. This makes it impossible for this kind of detectors to detect some liquid explosives which might be in various forms. The body scanners do not have the capability of detecting explosive liquids and they are the commonly used detectors in most of the airports in the United States. The airport security has been very much concern about people who try to get into airports with plastic, ceramic or metal explosives and on the other hand they do not take any precautions to check the type of liquids carried by passengers in the aircrafts or people inside the airport. Although the Government of the United States has a plan to put restrictions on the liquids carried by passengers in airports, it hopes to do so by the year 2010. This means that airports are vulnerable to attacks by use of liquid explosives before the government puts the restrictions. The government should also recommend advanced scanners that use advanced levels of backscatter x-rays so as to detect any concealed explosives. The passengers and the American people are against these kinds of scanners as they violate the right to privacy. The only solution that remains at the moment is restrict any kind of liquids into the airports, this means that passengers should be provided with any liquids that they need while on board.
