In a society that prohibits individuality, a world in which you are trapped inside your own thoughts, a false utopian environment where the establishment suppresses you, it is easy to give up hope. Anthem takes place in a futuristic society where the technological advances of modern day have been extinguished, and restrictions on independence are inflicted. The protagonist of the novel, Equality 7-2521, wakes up each morning to a routine, pre-scheduled day. Long hours of labor, little rest and disturbed sleep make up most of his life, a life in with no individuality. When you live practically the same monotonous day repeatedly, there is little room for progress, little room for hope of something better. Equality 7-2521, however, finds the small fragment of hope left, and with that hope, he creates a new life for himself and finds the individual spirit that lies within. It the city portrayed in Anthem, it is in violation of the rules of the World Council to think any thoughts that all of your brothers do not also think in unison.
The use of the word “I” or any way of distinguishing yourself from your brothers as a collective group is strictly forbidden, and consequences can be severe. Equality 7-2521 noticeably differs from his brothers from the beginning. He speaks of how his teachers dislike him in the House of Learning because he is too intelligent. His a daring outlook on life distinguishes him from his brothers. His individual spirit cannot be broken and the will to achieve his goals drives him onward. Equality 7-2521 finds himself thinking thoughts that are a sin. He writes about these sins, at first conflicted by whether or not he should rebel against his society, or if he should shut his feelings away and increase his efforts to fall in sync with his brothers. Equality enhances the rebellion when he discovers a place close to the Uncharted Forest that has evidence of the Unmentionable Times. These times were similar to our modern world, advanced in technology and knowledge of all kinds. A light bulb, the simple invention that we use each day without realizing its significance, is what Equality 7-2521 uncovers in his secret sanctuary. A symbol of intelligence, knowledge, progress, and hope, the light bulb serves as a significant check point in his life.

Once Equality gets the light bulb to work, he is so astounded by this achievement that he decides to bring it to the House of Scholars, believing he now has obtained a special piece of knowledge they know not of. The Scholars, however, do not share his enthusiasm about the glass box. In their eyes, Equality has broken the laws, and any achievements he has made are not worthy because of the violations made in the process. After Equality refuses to tell the Council of the Home where he had been, he is punished with a number of painful lashings. The whip impacts him blow after blow, and yet he doesn’t give away any information. Once the lashings cease, Equality wakes on the floor of a brick cell unable to move his own body. “Then we smiled, for we thought of the light and that we had not betrayed it.” Although Equality suffers through a harsh beating, his spirit remains unbroken and his dertermination to show his progress to the Scholars stays strong. The same courage and perseverance Equality shows after his punishment is the courage that allows him to succeed. In the forest, Equality lives a life of solitude until the Golden One joins him. Together they start a new life, a life where they are free to have their own beliefs and thoughts, a life in which knowledge becomes an attribute instead of a sin. The Golden One and Equality find a house from the Unmentionable Times deep in the forest where they live. Shelves of books and scripts filled with knowledge line the walls of the house. In these books, Equality discovers the word “I”. No longer does he refer to himself as a collective group with others; he decides his new name shall be Prometheus. The Golden One also obtains a new name for her new life and surroundings, Gaea. Together they create a new chapter in their lives, and never again will they have to worry about abiding by such restricting laws of a society whose purpose is to shut out the technological advances and freedoms of the Unmentionable Times. Unfortunately for Prometheus and his new family, they are the only ones who realized such a life could be possible; they are the only ones who dare to have hope. Everyone else still lives their lives in the sheltered community of World Councils and Brotherhood, which leaves Prometheus and company greatly outnumbered. Now it seems that all their progress and accomplishments are a waste, that all the obstacles they overcome are for nothing. The truth is, these accomplishments stand for something much greater than just their obvious value of progress. Prometheus proves to be capable of earning such a life as he did in the end of the novel because he never loses his faith. He always believes that somewhere and somehow he will start the life he wanted to live, a life where he was free to create his own limitations and expectations. His individual spirit is never broken during the process, and he earns his happy ending. His efforts are for something more important than anything else, something that matters above all else.
