American Beauty is the reflection of the people’s secret storms to the outside. It mentioned on the collapsing of the ‘American Dream’. It shows how the individuals of the same family can be indifferent from each other, how people can hide his or her character and his or her preferences from outside. Film explains that people can easily tell lies for proving his / her character to the outside. But the most important thing which the film focused on is the happy death and the efforts of the people for that. ‘American Dream’ is the life philosophy of the standard American family.
It tells that if you have a wife, a job and a house that means you are happy. Lester is the main character of the film. He has a wife, a job and a house. So according to ‘American Dream’ he must be happy; but in the reality he is unhappy. He hasn’t got any common features and pleasures with her wife. They didn’t make sex for about 20 years.
He is in the ’20 year-coma’. He has a job which is a writer of a magazine but the problem is he doesn’t like his job and he wants to quit this job. In his house there is no peace; her wife and her daughter don’t like him. Although all of his efforts he couldn’t have communication with her daughter. According to all of these situations ‘American Dream’ is collapsed by ‘American Beauty’.
Ricky is another important character in the film. He can easily lose his temper; because of this he spends 6 months in the hospital. His father is working in the army and a high- disciplinary man. His mother is very quiet person. Indifference is the main problem of this family. Every individual are indifferent from each other in this family.

They have no sharing with each other. Although Ricky is a vegetarian person her mother offers him meat. His father and mother have no knowledge about the job which Ricky makes. Ricky earns money from selling drugs to outside; but his father thinks that he is a waiter in a restaurant. So it is clear that there can be some families like that whose individuals are like that indifferent from each other.
‘Homosexuality is the weirdest and the most shaming thing.’ This is the Ricky’s fathers speech. He hates from homosexual people. After the visiting of the gay couple Jim & Jim he runs down them. All of his speeches about homosexuality are against it. When Ricky tells that this is a choice his father starts to shut to him. He is in the US Army so he is very disciplinary man and has a authority on Ricky.
He wants Ricky not to be homosexual. But at the end while he tries to kiss Lester everybody can easily understands that he is a homosexual. Because of army he tries to keep secret this big secret. Angela is another character who is the best friend of the Lester’s daughter Jane. She thinks that being an ordinary person is the weirdest and worst thing. She tries to escaping from ordinarily person.
Because of it she tells her sex experiences to everyone around her. She always speaks about men. Cause of her charm Lester falls in love with her. At the end while they are together with Lester she says that she is virgin and this will be her first experience. So she also changes her personality for seeming extraordinary to the outside. ‘American Beauty’s tates that everybody can make everything for their principals, for their beliefs and for their ideals.
This is very normal according to the film. ‘I am Lester Burnham. I am going to die in a year.’ This is the speech of Lester at the beginning of the film. But nobody cares about it. At the end Lester was dead like he said. After his dead everybody thinks about the relationship between his death and his speech.
The relationship is he lives for having a happy death. When he dies, he dies happy for, if he would have died at the beginning of the movie he would have died unhappy and unfulfilled with life. We see that he is happy when Ricky leans over and looks at his body and he himself smiles for he knows that he died a happy man. All the things that he had been doing before he died was preparing himself for a happy death.
