The American Dream is having an equal opportunity to follow dreams they have set for themselves, and to have the freedom to choose who they want to be and how they want to live their lives. In America there is equality, freedom, opportunity and diversity. These are the things that prove the American Dream is still alive today.
Equality is the American Dream. Everyone wants to be treated equally and everyone gets a fighting chance to accomplish their American Dream. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., an important civil right activist, said, “I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”(King).
Martin Luther King Jr’s dream did come true, people are no longer judged by the color of their skin, they are judged by who they are inside. He would be proud to know not only can a black man be considered for the election but also be able to become President of the United States of America. Everyone also has the right to be with the person they love whether or not it’s the same gender as them, they shouldn’t be treated any different.
Obama has said “same-sex couples have to be treated, before the eyes of the law, as you, know, heterosexual couples…..It’s based on my personal experience seeing loving couples who are committed to each other, raising kids, and are just outstanding people.” (Obama) As of May 10, 2012, gay marriage has been legalized in the following eight states: Massachusetts (May 17, 2004), Connecticut (Nov. 12, 2008), Iowa (Apr. 24. 2009), Vermont (Sep. 1, 2009), New Hampshire (Jan. 1, 2010), New York (June 24, 2011), Washington (passed Feb. 14, 2012; effective June 7, 2012), Maryland (passed Mar. 1, 2012. President Obama is still trying to make rights for all the people, no matter the race, sex, or if their heterosexual.
