Americans, or the citizen of the United States of America, truly present a unique culture that assimilated many other world cultures, habits and customs. The harsh environmental conditions that the first US settlers faced as well as modern day US affluence surely influenced the characteristics of individual Americans and the US culture as a whole. In the following essay, I am going to speak about positive and negative characteristics of Americans, using my family and friends as an example. I will note that in many people good and bad characteristics go hand in hand throughout their lives. Certainly the good thing about Americans is their will to success. I can see my friends and cousins constantly prepare for either college, MBA or any other important activity. Their desire to become successful drives them forward helping to achieve new heights.
The second good thing about Americans is the ability to plan. This is not limited just to keeping up with the school or work schedule but also to planning the whole life. The concept of American dream, which means having a big house, hot wife with big breasts and big behind (or smart, muscular and caring guy), many cute and healthy kids, a dog, a back yard a brand new car is what drives many Americans to work and school. Their ability to plan every step from school to college to marriage to buying a new house and retirement, is what makes Americans really competitive and victorious. The third good thing about Americans is their ability to work hard. Unlike the exchange students who are supposed to represent their country in the USA, and who except for the Japanese spend a larger time socializing than studying, the US students can truly prioritize and dedicate their time to studying rather than to socializing. Yet I would like to note that here this workaholism is good for the businesses and country, yet to individuals it means alienation and inability to properly socialize. As for the negative characteristics of Americans I would like to say that it is materialism.

Regardless of religion, race or gender, each individual puts the material well-being first. This is also seen in the desire to marry rich (even without love), watch him/her die, inherit the wealth and liver happily ever since. This character trend which I trace not only in many of my friends but also in many of my cousins certainly is similar to prostitution-when a person is willing to do everything for money. By the way, I personally believe that the US involvement in Iraq would mean peace keeping unless the USA and Great Britain did not extract the Iraqi oil for its own purposes which once again characterizes the US materialistic soul which desires to sacrifice some soldiers for Muslim oil. On a more personal matter, I know of two girlfriends of mine, who earn money for college, room and board, plus living expenses from working 2 months in Las Vegas Massage confidential service industry. Moral and personal satisfaction from such work aside, money (or whatever money can buy) is what drives these girls into this one-months-in-a- year questionable profession. And, although I do not blame them for their choice, I can say that almost every American would sell himself/herself if offered enough money or power.
Another negative characteristics of Americans is the selfishness. From my observation, regardless of whether my family friends die or move out of the town, my family would not care. Neither would they care if the whole country of China disappears or if the Russians take over Western Europe. The only thing they care about is what is going on in the neighborhood, or the country at the most. Whenever, the US faced the anthrax scare, Washington DC sniper, or terrorist attacks, these people do not care as long as these things not happen in their town or state. In conclusion I would like to say, that certainly my family and friends do not represent accurately all Americans. Yet if you ask people around you (especially if you ask foreigners) they would agree with parts of the positives/negatives of the character traits mentioned above and would even claim to know people who possess these characteristics.
