Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the 3 chronic diseases that eating an apple a day can help prevent.
Central Idea/Thesis Statement: Eating an apple a day can help prevent 3 chronic diseases such as Diabetes, Cancer and Heart disease.
Introduction
I. When hearing the phrase “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” some people might not believe it, but after extensive research conducted by various participants such as the American Institute of Cancer Research an apple a day might actually keep the doctor away.
II. Apples are one of my favorite fruits so I decided to do research on them and according to Medical Doctor Michael Greger, “Foods high in antioxidants, such as apples, appear to help prevent many chronic oxidative stress diseases.”
III. State Central Idea & Preview Main Points
A. First I’ll discuss how eating an apple a day can help prevent diabetes and decrease the chances of getting type II diabetes.
B. Second, I’ll discuss how another Chronic Disease that eating an apple a can help prevent is Cancer.
C. Finally, I’ll discuss that Heart Disease can be prevented by eating an apple a day.
(First let me begin with how eating an apple a day can help prevent diabetes and decrease the chances of getting type II diabetes.)

I. Eating an apple a day can help prevent diabetes and decrease the chances of getting type II diabetes.
A. According to a report by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, last access May 13, 2015 “Reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes may be as simple as eating more apples, a new study has found.”
B. “Nutritionist Leslie Beck wrote that people in the study who ate a higher amount of apples were found to be 23 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes.”
(Now that I talked about how eating an apple a day can help prevent diabetes and can decrease the chances of getting type II diabetes, I’ll move on to how eating an apple a day can help prevent cancer.)
II. Another Chronic Disease that eating an apple a day can help prevent is Cancer.
A. According to researchers from WASHINGTON (CBSDC), last access May 12, 2015 “Apples have recently been added to the list of “Foods That Fight Cancer,” which is maintained by the American Institute of Cancer Research.”

Also from WASHINGTON (CBSDC) last access May 12, 2015“According to the AICR official website, the levels of vitamin C and fiber found in the fruit – which, according to the Institute, is the second most frequently consumed fruit in the United States – are what give apples their cancer-fighting abilities.”

III. Heart Disease can be prevented by eating an apple a day.
A. According to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, last access May 13, 2015 “In the current study, the researchers wanted to assess the long-term effect that apple consumption might have on cardiovascular health. They recruited 160 women between the ages of 45 and 65. The women were randomly assigned to one of two dietary intervention groups. One group was given 75 grams of dried apples every day for a year, while the other group was given dried prunes daily for a year”
B. The researchers from Birmingham and Women’s Hospital stated that “The researchers found that women eating dried apples lowered their total cholesterol by 14%. LDL cholesterol or Low Density Lipoprotein aka your good cholesterol dropped by 23%”

I. Eating an apple a day can help prevent 3 chronic diseases such as Diabetes, Cancer and Heart disease.
II. I told you about how apples can help prevent diabetes and decrease the chances of having type II diabetes, how apples can help prevent cancer and also how eating apples can help prevent Heart Disease.
III. Now when you pick up an apple to eat, just remember how an apple a day keeps chronic diseases away.
IV. Eating an apple a day might not be that bad for you, unless of course you don’t like the taste of them, but researchers found that they are full of antioxidants that our bodies love and crave. So an apple a day can keep the doctor away.
