Brian does think of his mother, but not to blame on her, Brian just simply misses her and home. Also, after the attack of the tornado, although Brian has got nothing but only the hatchet left, and everything is back to the start, he doesn’t just stand there and cry or give vent to his anger like normal kids at his age will do, instead, Brian is able to think positively and starts to rebuild things immediately. He doesn’t got beat down by the adversity, he still keeps a sense of humor by hoping that the moose that attacked him is hit by the tornado.
Through these two examples, we can see that Brian is more mature than before. Secondly, Brian has become more thoughtful. Before the crash, Brian had always wanted to tell his dad about the secret, the reason why his mom divorced with his father, but after he is rescued, Brian gives up telling the truth to his dad maybe because he cares about others’ feelings, he doesn’t want his dad to have negative feelings or to blame on his mom since Brian loves his parents deeply in heart. Also, when Brian sees the bear, he quickly runs away from it, since he is afraid that the bear will harm him.
But then after thinking, Brian learns that the bear won’t cause any harm to him because he is now a part of the nature too. So when the next time Brian sees the wolves, instead of running away, Brian nods to them, showing respect to he living things in nature. Another example is Brian thinks more after the skunk comes to steal his food and attacks him. Brian realizes that nothing in nature is lazy, in order to keep his food, which is the most important thing in nature, safe, he needs to pay more time to dig deeper holes, further from his shelter.
The Essay on Importance of Nature
The more technologically savvy our society becomes and as our cities become larger and more urbanized our connection with nature gets weaker and weaker. It is difficult to remember the natural beauty of a 100 year old oak tree while you dwell in the city where you are lucky to see a tree every three blocks. Our attitudes (especially people who live in very urbanized areas) tend to think that ...
Brian learns that he can’t take shortcuts in the nature and needs to work hard. Each time after Brian experiences something, he becomes more thoughtful and begins to think further and deeper. He changes his point of view from a city boy to a part of the nature. So we can see that Brian has become more thoughtful. Lastly, Brian has become more skilful. When Brian starts to make a fire himself, he doesn’t succeed at first. It takes him a long time to try using different fuels and methods to make a fire.
After trying many times, he now uses less than an hour to start the fire, knowing what exact fuels he needs. Also, Brian can make tools like bows and arrows to catch fish and foolbirds quickly through observations and countless times of failure. Moreover, he is more skilful at building shelters and recognizing raspberries that are good to eat and fish that is eatable. All of these skills are gained through experiences and failures. When all’s said and done, Brian has become more mature, thoughtful and skilful after the days he survives in the woods all alone by himself.
