Antz Assignment By: Pratheep Rajan
The movie “Antz” is a great movie for this class, because it is related to civics in a lot of ways. Civics is the study of the rights, duties and freedoms of a citizen as well as the role of the roles that these citizen play within society. In the movie the colony of ants have their jobs assigned to them at birth, because their government was run that way. The ants could be assigned roles such as a soldier or a worker, but along with their responsibilities they also had limited rights within the colony. The colony was set up in social classes in which the workers where looked down upon, not only that but the social classes were not permitted to interact with each other. All these rights are things that all citizens deserve, but the government in this colony did not agree with it. Within the movie the colony had a government that revolved around a monarch and a military leader, but this type of government was challenged during the movie by citizens within the colony. All these reasons make this movie a great example of how certain societies are run.
Many ants in the movie agreed with the type of government they had (monarchy) which was led by the queen, while others disagreed and tried to change it. One example of a person who wanted to change the current government system was Zee the main character of the story. In the beginning of the movie Zee wanted to go to Insectopia which was like paradise for insects. Insectopia supposedly had an Anarchy government which appealed to Zee, because it meant that there was no government and that no one could boss him around. Later on in the movie Zee believed that every ant should have a voice in how the colony should be run, so basically he wanted a democratic government. With this type of government the ants could make their own decisions and everyone could have an input on how the colony should function. This would benefit the colony greatly because the ants would be happier working with the government to make it better instead of working for it. Not only that, but the citizens could have some great ideas that would benefit the colony. Another ant in the colony wanted to change the monarch controlled government even though he was the General of the Army. General Mandible wanted to create a super colony with a superior race and an extremely strong army made up of the strongest, smartest and most fit ants. He generally wanted to create a colony with a military dictator which would be totally controlled by him, where the army would keep order. This would not benefit the colony in any way, because he wanted to create a whole new colony and leave the old one. Not only did he want to leave the old colony, but he tried to kill off all the “weak” ants. All in all some ants wanted to change their government and others wanted to just live peacefully within the colony.
The Term Paper on Citizen Kane: an Accurate Portrayal of William Randolph Hearst?
Many have called Citizen Kane the greatest cinematic achievement of all time. It is indeed a true masterpiece of acting, screen writing, and directing. Orson Welles, its young genius director, lead actor, and a co-writer, used the best talents and techniques of the day (Bordwell 103) to tell the story of a newspaper giant, Charles Kane, through the eyes of the people who loved and hated him. ...
Within this movie some characters were working for the benefit of the colony while others tried to reform the government to benefit themselves. A good example of a person that worked to benefit the colony was Zee. At first he felt alone and weak which pushed him to go to insectopia, but near the end of the movie he came back and tried to save the colony from doom. He tried to save the rest of the workers by almost sacrificing himself and tried to change the government for the well-being of the rest of the colony. Not only that, but he unknowingly started a revolution, where the workers started to overthrow their current government, which would have benefitted them all with better rights if it succeeded. An ant that tried to change the colony for selfish purposes was General Mandible. General Mandible was a very proud ant and was seeking superiority among all. For this reason he wanted to create a super race of ants that would fit all of his needs to create a colony superior among all other colonies. He even went as far a scheming to kill the current monarch and the rest of the “weak” ants by drowning them inside their homes. With all this he could fulfill his dream and be superior above all ant/termite and any other insect colony. Both of these ants acted so they could change how the colony was run, but one worked for the benefit, while the other worked for their own selfish reasons.

No type of government created so far has been perfect; so perfect that it met everyone’s needs, but there are governments that would suite a certain community better than others. A representative democratic government would greatly benefit the Antz colony in a way that a monarchy (the government they had) cannot. A democratic government would allow the ants to voice their opinions and not feel controlled by someone. The ants will also gain new rights and freedoms that would allow them to be happier. Also they would be able to pick and vote for ants that could help make the colony better. The reason why a representative democratic government is better than a direct democratic government is because there are too many ants (millions) for the voting on decisions and affairs to be efficient. Another type of government that would benefit the colony is a communist government. In a communist environment every ant would be equal and the class system would be eliminated. Since the colony doesn’t have a currency no ant would be complaining about low wages. A mix of both governments would also be very good for the colony. The colony works best when the ants work together and that will happen if their government was changed to a communist or representative democratic government.
