it s no mean task to discuss libertarian ideas simply because they differ from one proponent to another……………….I would define libertarianism as a system that permits everybody to do whatever they want to do provided they do not infringe other people s property……….The definition sounds simple and clear but there s more than meets the eye………It implies that you can open a pub, a brothel,a cabaret,an opium den close to a school as nobody is forced to patronize these establisments…………………..So far,so good but plain sailing comes quickly to an end as you realize that such policies are going to infuriate lots of people crying blue murder ,finding your suggestions outrageous………………………………………..Immediately lots of people will put on a pained look and start by telling you that youths, schoolboys, the sick ,all those who are at a disadvantage, deserve to be protected by the state if we want to live in a caring society……………………………Freedom has certainly a price but we can t enforce it at all costs by trampling over the most vulnarable citizens …………………….Things were easier at the turn of the 20th century with most people living in the countryside or small towns…….cut off from Washingtown……….Unaware of what was going on in the world ……..being fierce adhĂ©rents to a free society as most of them had fled their country to flee religious persecution, tyranny, poverty, famines and totalitarian states………Hence, the American constitution which is the mainstay of the ideal that animâtes most immigrants……They were willing to work long hours to pry open the fortress of persecution so as to put an end to restriction of entry in some activities .So,people from all walks of life were going to revolutionize economic progress with hard work, perseverance and a state and civil servants Under close scrutiny……….By definition, companies, banks were small and consequently,if a factory went belly up and the personnel dismissed ,it didn t cause a furore as the jobless would quickly find another jod in another locale!……Job mobility was the rule with people thinking nothing of packing up their meager belongings and heading towards another eldorado……..Once again ,it worked because the country was large, job offers plentiful,American workers not balking at the prospect of kissing good bye to their house, their friends,an attachment to their native land………………………….But what was true yesterday isn t necessarily true today………………………The recent subprime crisis setting off the worst economic crisis since the 1929 stock crash,is a case in point…………………..with the crisis worsening fast, people unable to pay back their mortgage and property being repossessed, unemployment shooting up,huge companies like general motors on the brink of bankruptcy, and lots of small and medium sized concerns shedding workers ,could the US administration observe a hands off attitude………………what had already happened with Chyisler bailed out by the government happened for GM and other Financial institutions. So we see that even the country that championed liberty, free markets ,no interference in market forces ,wasn t true to its word………….Furthermore ,people are better informed and more and more unwilling to be treated like a commodity……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….As a conclusion,i would say that western countries, especially the European community ,disregard their own ideals by subsidizing several sections of their economy, notably agricultural produce, aeronautic industry high speed train network,Paris underground trains, military programs and what not………In the meantime ,despite flat denials the USA does likewise………………..Lots of other examples could be put forward and used convincingly to affirm that Libertarianism is no longer a credible alternative to solve the problems facing our governments
