Slide 1: Background
Many Interns are constantly being abused. Many employers see internships as a way to use college kids to do the work that no one else wants to do for free. Companies take full advantage of college students in need of internships because they know that it today’s world it is nearly impossible to get a job without having some type of prior experience in their field. A majority of unpaid internships are legal, but are they ethical? This is where things begin to get a little more difficult.
It is not illegal to have unpaid interns but when these interns are doing jobs that having nothing to do with their field this is when it becomes a problem. Many employers use interns to do their dirty work such as making photocopies, stuffing envelopes, or even going on coffee runs for the company. However, it is completely legal to have unpaid interns as long as they are doing work relevant to their field of work. And like I’ve already mentioned many employers love summer interns because they just see it as free labor.

Slide 4: The six factors
1. The training, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to what would be given in a professional school or academic educational instruction. 2. The training is for the benefit of the trainees.
3. The trainees do not displace regular employees, but work under their close observation. 4. The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the trainees, and on occasion the employer’s operations may actually be hindered. 5. The trainees are not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the training period. 6. The employer and the trainees understand that the trainees are not entitled to wages for the time spent in training.

Express your gratitude to your intern. Even if you cannot pay your intern show your appreciation. Take them out to lunch or maybe give them a gift card of some sort. Make it clear at the begging of the internship what they should expect to accomplish or gain from the experience.
Slide 6: The things not to do while managing an unpaid intern Don’t have your interns doing useless work that is not going to help them in the future at all. This is not fair to your intern and is not legal. Don’t take advantage of you intern and have them running errands such as getting coffee for everyone. This would also be considered illegal since this does not benefit the intern. Avoid internships with close friends or family members. This may cause problems in the long run if the internship does not work out. Do not tell an intern they will have a job at the end of their internship if it is not 100% certain.
