From reading this article, I believe the author wants us to learn that always pressing this message of ecological history forward is the philosopher, theologian and author, Thomas Berry. Writing at the end of the millennium and overlooking the next, Berry writes a history of the North American Continent, as if told by the earth. In a chapter taken from his book, The Great Work: Our Way Into the Future, Berry uniquely chronicles the geological development of the continent. He further explains the soft footprints of the indigenous Native American people on the land, their achievements and their understanding of the interrelationship of all living things. Also he wants us to learn the time the Europeans arrived on the continent. Lastly, Berry wants us the reader to learn of the earths now limited resources, he also writes to raise awareness and to renew our dreams of a better life and better planet.
Thomas Berry also used other people’s research and sources to write his own article on the North American continent. One author he uses for help is Weatherford where he talks about new pharmaceutical agents. Another person is Kolodny, and on top of that Berry also uses William Stricland’s account of his journey up the Hudson River. He also used one of Cronyn’s articles for purposeful information. Thomas Berry used many other author’s articles to find information to write his own article on the North American continent. The author communicates with the reader by letting us know by what he says in his article, and one thing he does say is, “we might well brood over these scenes until we come to some depth awareness of what has happened and begin to dream again, this time a more coherent dream of an integral community of the human and all those other – than – human component members of the North American Continent..
