The purpose of this paper is analysis two forms or art. First I will explain who created each art piece; then I will describe what each art piece is and where each piece is located and finally I will tell where you can find each piece. Second I will attempt to explain what the artist is trying to communicate and how did the artist communicate his message. I will discuss how the two works of art made me feel and why. Thirdly I will address each piece of art value and what type of value worth and the significance the work holds.
Then I will go on to explain what I think the 21st century Western society can learn from each piece, why or why not. Finally I will explain what another visitor thought of one of the two and have them answer the same question I just stated above. For the last few weeks I have learned that art is everywhere, there is no one particular express of art. There is no society that is known of dating back in human history that has lived without some form of art. There is an impulse in us to make and respond to art, it is apparent to be deeply ingrained in us this ability to learn language.
This is what set us apart as humans. What I learned a little about myself when it comes to art, the wall of my home are decorated with photos, painting, and other decors because I chose them and find them beautiful and meaningful. I am currently look at the world differently now as I walk through the community I pass by buildings that are designed for visual appeal and serves as practical ends. Now when I pass by them I pause and take a moment just to look at them and take pleasure. I want to appreciate the architect’s work and the effect that they have prepared for the people to see.

What leaned such experience is an aesthetic experience, this is a branch of philosophy concerned with feelings aroused in us by sensory experiences. These experiences we have through sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell. (Getlein, 2010) I am currently stationed in Korea and I find that the culture here is highly strong in the art area. From what I see that and learned here Korean art includes traditions in calligraphy, music, painting and pottery, that is marked by the use of natural forms, surface decoration, and bold colors and sounds. Korean art is characterized by transitions in the main religion at the time through various forms of Western art in the 20th century. There is an appearance of more art works in metal seen all over South Korean in parks, by streams and lakes. South Korean government encourages the maintenance of cultural continuity by awards and scholarships for younger students in rare Korean art forms. Since I have been here we are encourage on going out and exploring Korea and learn of their culture. Here I work closely with katusa, which are soldiers of the Republic of Korean army.
They take us out two Saturdays a month and we eat different foods, go to local places, and shopping. One particular Saturday a katusa name Cha and I decided that we were going to go Seoul Korea’s capital to an art museum. As we traveled by train I notice that the building here are built unique and that they take pride and put a lot of effort in their work rather large or small even down to clothing. There is no set style here everyone does their own thing and I like and appreciate that. You can be yourself and not worry about if I fit in or what the latest trend is.
We arrived at the museum and there was a floor dedicated to a local Korean artist named Chun Kyung-Ja. Chun exhibit has five different sections: Lavender Intimacy and Remorse; Eternal Portrait; Endless Journey; Fragrance of Literature; and Designs and Drawings. I took my time to look at all the art work, carefully reading the biography displayed next to each piece. Chun is known as autobiographic, which means the elaboration within the painting derive from the artists herself her recurring themes are her own life, dreams, fantasies and desires.

She used the visual form, with the human figure as the main subject for some of her portrait paintings. The portrait that stood out to me and that I felted connected with is the painting of The 22 pages of my sad legend, which seem like it was a figure painting but there is more meaning to it. The painting was painted in Chun fifties reminiscing of her twenties, the piece has a dreamy atmosphere but shows remorse, emptiness, and solitudes. I see and feel the emotion in the woman’s hollow but lively eyes.
I believe the painting illustrate a woman in the alter ego. The other self reflecting her inner world from which her life was built. The painting in my opinion is representational art, the human form is the primary subject which is known as figurative art. The color selection Chun chose for this painting shows she recognize the importance of individual color preferences. There is a possibility that she spent a considerable amount of time determining the color for her art works.
Chun is ware that certain colors suggest certain mood, that’s why she chose to use these colors for this particular piece. The artist did a good job of communicating her message, what I noticed in this painting is that Chun used colors that did not correspond to what the eye sees, but what she felt inside probably. She simplified and flattened her composition by not adding too many details that would take away any feeling. Ecology is another art painting I took notice to. Which is one of Chun popular pieces it showed me the complexity of Chun’s mind.
The painting depict a twisted and tangled black spotted snake coiled together, concocting an atmosphere of hostility and chaos is what I took from this piece. She created the master piece in 1957, when Chun was struggling through a challenging time, a period of hardships that involved economic distress, a painful death of a child, a burdensome marriage and a taxing love life. (10mag. 2013) In this portrait I feel that Chun communicate her message very well and detailed by the medium she chose and the colors she used.

The tempo really expresses her passion and pain that she felt at the time she painted this piece. After view both pieces I asked Cha the katusa that brought me there how he felt about both pieces of art and asked him to choose one that he liked best. He actual chose Ecology, in his opinion the artist had a dark side that she was expressing pent up aggression and frustration. In Korean culture, the word for snake, sa, is coincidentally a homonym for the number 4 and the word for death. He felt that the artist was mourning the death of a love one.
What I sense from a lot of her art is that it is direct observation, it helps Chun to see more attentively and it shows in her work. The words I would use to describe Chun’s art are unity and variety, the unity is that all the elements work together and the variety brings the diversity. Chun is unique from other painters because she uses primary colors in traditional Korean paintings. She used bright colors and clears form doing this Chun broke the Korean art cliche that paintings should be in white and black with natural curves.
Chun has created her own style of painting that is unique, she uses such peculiarity, and people can quickly recognize her paintings that also serve as her trademark. In my opinion I believe that the younger generation will have the opportunity to reflect over their live and existence through Chun exhibition. There is a lot to learn about Chun’s spirit and mindset. Through her paintings and her life Chun constantly fought against the social convention and customs. She broke the mold that society tried to lock her in, Chun struggle still exist with the young generation today.
