Attention Deficit Disorder is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. There appears to be a deficiency in the brains ability to produce or use certain chemicals called transmitter substances or neurotransmitters. The theory is that a shortage of certain neurotransmitters results in the brain being under-stimulated, therefore it’s deficient in regulating its own activities such as attention.
Attention Deficit Disorder is characterized by a number of common symptoms. The symptoms are short attention span or distractibility, impulsiveness, and hyperactive. This results in social problems and disorganization. As ADD kids get older they feel stupid and are often accused of being lazy. Kids with Attention Deficit Disorder tend to daydream allot more than others.
People with ADD are easily distracted and have limited attention spans. They can sit for a while and pay attention if the topic is interesting to them. People with Attention Deficit Disorder usually do this while watching TV, playing Nintendo, and at sporting events. Many ADD children will tell you how annoying it is when someone around them is talking.
People with ADD are impulsive meaning to act without thinking. In one case a five-year old with ADD almost drowned when he went to a pool with his father. He saw people jumping into the pool and thought it would be fun. He jumped right in without remembering that he can’t swim. He was pulled from the bottom of the pool several minutes later.

Hyperactivity is a real problem for people with ADD especially in children. Parents will usually describe them as always on the go. ADD girls tend to be less hyperactive than ADD boys are. The hyperactivity usually fades by adolescence. This doesn’t mean all the symptoms are gone though. There are only a limited number of ADD children who can’t sit still at all.
ADD kids try to be the class clown when they are really quite clever. Attention Deficit Disorder children are also forgetful; they lose track of time, and lose things. ADD kids seem to forget everything. They forget what they studied just last night for today’s biology test.

A teenager and their non-ADD friends have a lot in common. That’s because he or she is going through a period of tremendous physical and emotional changes just like every other teen.
People with ADD are not choosing to act the way they do. They would like to sit still and do what they are supposed to. He or she would like to make good grades. They would like to pay attention to the teacher’s lecture all the way through class and take good notes. But they just can’t seem to do it.
There are three distinct forms of Attention Deficit Disorder. Outwardly Expressive ADD, Inwardly Directed ADD, and Highly Structured ADD. A person can have any combination of these.
Outwardly Expressive ADD communicate so that everyone knows what he or she is feeling. This behavior is characterized by hyperactivity, impulsively, a low frustration threshold, high level risk taking, difficulty with long term projects, little interest in details lack of temper control, expressive moods, and having an outgoing personality.
These people can be successful in sales or entertainment or another career that requires a quick response and lots of energy. Outwardly Expressive ADD people often make good entrepreneurs.
People with Inwardly Directed ADD hide their feelings. Often spacing out, people with Inwardly Directed ADD may be underachievers, may over commit themselves to activities, can be depressed, spend allot of time watching television or using a computer, have a difficult time completing assignments. Though not hyperactive, they are restless, and love to daydream.
Highly Structured ADD people tend to worry. They are perfectionist who are highly organized, have difficulty controlling their temper, and have difficulty resuming tasks after being disrupted. They tend to be fairly rigid and have trouble cooperating with others.
This type of person is drawn to highly structured jobs. The military, accounting, piloting aircraft’s, or any other highly structured jobs. A person with this type of ADD starts something they don’t quit till their done.

Here are some behaviors that aren’t associated with Attention Deficit Disorder but I think should be: creative, hardworking, high energy, resourceful, warm-hearted, loyal, sensitive (not often shown but we do have feelings to), trusting, forgiving, fun, observant, and down to earth. I could go on and on and on if I wanted. I think this group describes people with ADD fairly well.

Poor attention, boredom, low tolerance, intensity that may lead to power struggles with authorities. More ADD words? No, these are behaviors associated with giftedness. Where would we would be without science, sports, comedy and music. Look what Magic Johnson did for basketball. Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams who doesn t laugh at their jokes? The music of Mozart and Beethoven is just wonderful. What do all of these folks have in common? ADD.

Deficit Disorder was not known or called something else. The others have been diagnosed with ADD. To some ADD is a gift, a hidden talent that people with ADD must learn how to use correctly. If not, they will be in the “self-destruct mode” for life. Kids with ADD, who get the help of teachers, friends, parents and coaches, can learn to use this gift effectively. Suddenly, things become clearer to the person with ADD and they can begin to use their untapped talent.
Dr. Ned Hallowell, an adult and child psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School, has written many books on ADD. He says, “People with ADD are highly imaginative and intuitive. They have a feel for things, a way of seeing right to the heart of the matter while others have to reason their way along methodically. This is a child who, having been reprimanded for blurting out something, is then praised for having blurted out something brilliant.” He goes on to say that, “these people can feel allot in places where most of us are blind, they can if not see the light they can feel it and can produce answers out of the dark. People with ADD have a sixth, seventh, or eighth sense that sets them apart from others.”
If people continue to insist that people with ADD must reason problems the way they do and behave the way people without Attention Deficit Disorder do then people with ADD will never develop their gift and talent. However if they are perceived positively, and other without ADD stick with them we are as Hallowell says, “on the brink of startling conclusions or surprising solutions.”
