“Ava Maria” is a very popular song. It has been covered for generations. Most know this to be a song sung on Christmas, or sung at the church. But there is another song called “Ava Maria” which the difference is very apparent. Both these song are considered to be discourse. Keith Grant-Davie describes discourses as an activity an event, or a situation shaped by language or communication. These discourse are written by rhetors. The rhetors that wrote the two version of Ava Maria I am focusing on are Beyonce Knowles and her rhetorical team and Celine Dion.
Both songs have different constraints, audience, exigence and meaning but yet they are the same song. Ava Maria is a very popular catholic church song. It was a prayer to mother Mary put to music. The Prayer was called Hail Mary. When Celine Dion covered the song she kept the same meaning as the original. Celine was a roman catholic, she was born into a big catholic family with 14 kids. This I believe is the reason she choose to cover the song. The song Ava Maria would be very meaningful to Celine Dion because the Roman Catholic church hold Mother Mary very high. They came to call her Mother of god. The meaning of this song is very simple.
It a prayer to Mother Mary, who is the mother of Jesus. Marshall 2 The exigence is not that simple thought. Keith Grant-Davie describes exigence as a problem or need that can be addressed by communication. The exigence of this song is just to spreed the word abut Mother Mary and show how important she is to the Roman Catholic religion. The rhetor Celine Dion was a Roman catholic. It is said that through her whole carrier she stayed true to her religion. I feel she sung this song to let her audience know she was still very faithful to the church. Dion’s type of music was pop and soul conventions, she got a lot of criticism from this.
The Essay on Mother Archetype Man Mary Demeter
The Always Present Mother "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man" (Gen. 2: 23). History has shown us that the "Great Mother" archetype has been with society since the beginning of time. Through stories, songs, poems and thoughts, man has always found the need for the "Mother" and the women that make this archetype possible. ...
This is why I believe she choose to do a religious song. To show the critics she was still her and true to herself. Celine started her career as a teen and doing this song that meant a lot to her religion probably made her feel young again. The fact that a song she sung as a little kid could still be sung and touch people in the church might have been very fulfilling to her. Celine Dion has been in the music game for some time now so her audience is probably very extensive. She started off singing in her hometown and became a instant hit soon after her first record release which was titled La voix du bon Dieu (“The Voice of the Good God”).
Soon after she became a big hit world wide besides in America. At eighteen she seen Michael Jackson preform and she new she wanted to be a pop artist. Some years later her dream came true. She became big in America as a soft rock and adult contemporary artist. Because she went through so many changes Celine Dion Audience has to be very large. In Grant-Davie article “Rhetorical Situations and Constraints” he describes audience as potential customers. Potential customers of Celine Dion would be very extensive. There so many genres you can fit her in. Some might considered this a constraint of hers. Constraints are factors that Marshall 3 imit or focus on the exigence. Because so many people listen to her work if its not from their particular genre they might be turned off. Just like how Ava Maria is a catholic song someone who atheists might not understand it or connect with it. Another constraint might be the fact the song was done over so many times, In different versions and changed for different catholics. Celine covers the Western Latin version. Some of the words in her version were changed because of a priest named Thomas Aquinas. Although Celine version has to deal with religion Beyonces version is different. She mainly sings about love and hope.
The Essay on The Mambo Kings Play Songs Of Love
The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love By: Oscar Hijuelo Harper Collins Publishers 1989 407 Pages (No Bibliography, Pics, Maps or Index) The book that I read was rather pornographic. It was a story about 2 brothers and 6 other people who put together a band and played in clubs almost every night. After playing their gigs, theyd go off and get drunk and then go sleep with about 4 different girls every ...
Beyonce preforms the song but she is not the only Rhetor. Beyonce song was written by a rhetorical team. Consisting of Stargate and Amanda Ghost. This rhetorical team came up with Beyonce version of “Ava Maria”. With a lot of rhetors the exigence might be different to each of them but I believe the exigence that Beyonce wanted to get across was love. How spiritual love is and how you have the one person who will always be in your heart. The Meaning of the song I believe is just love. How you can fall in love with one person for a lifetime . In her song she says “ surrounded by friends but I am alone: ‘How can the silence seem so loud? and then ‘There’s only us when the lights go down” Beyonce was talking about her love with Jay-Z. This song came out very close to their marriage. In those specific lyrics shes talking about how they are famous and love each other but they have so many fake people around but when they leave their love will still be. Thats how you can tell she talking about her love Jay-Z As a young girl Beyonce was doing music. She was not writing her songs but she was preforming them. As she got older she started to write her own songs. This is when I believe she was established as a rhetor. She knows what her audience likes.
When doing this song though I feel she Marshall 4 wanted to focus on her life and her marriage with Jay-Z instead of her audience. Beyonce audience is probably as big as Celine Dion’s because she been doing music for her whole life to. But Beyonce stayed in her genre throughout the years. Beyonce genre is pop and R&B. So it might have through her audience off seeing a song entitled “Ava Maria”. Being that Beyonce is not catholic she really has no connection with Ava Maria besides her view on the song which is love. Being that some of Beyonce music is sinful to the catholic church , most of her audience probably aren’t strict catholic.
Beyonce had an alliterative exigence with this song. I feel Beyonce choose a controversial title to make her audience listen to the words. When I first heard this song I thought it was about religion but when I replayed it I noticed it had nothing to do with religion. I think Beyonce was trying to capture that. Because your so in tuned with trying to figure out what it has to do with Mother Mary you see that its all about her love with Jay-Z . This also might be her constraints. Beyonce sings pop and R&B so having a religious song on her record might be an constraint.
The Essay on Early Autumn Love Mary Bill
Early Autumn What is love So many people wonder, yet few really know. Love is blind, but if you are fortunate to find true love, you should cherish it and never let it go under appreciated because love is ever changing. In the short story Early Autumn by Langston Hughes, this ever-changing cycle of love is evident. When Bill was very young, they had been in love, but something unimportant caused ...
Because her audience knows her for two things it might be displeasing to them. Another constraint is making a popular religious song into a song about love. Catholics are not going to be happy that she uses a song thats about purity and the birth of their lord to signify love. Epically that she talking about sex in the song. Which can be alright because in her lyrics she says “ her first and her last” meaning that the person she loses her virginity to will be the only person she sleeps with. The church wants people to do that. Also her voice is a constraint because Beyonce cant hit very high notes ruins the songs.
The rhetorical team had to make the song lower to go with her voice. Because Beyonce covered a very well-known song about religion and changed the meaning complete is the biggest constraint yet. Thats a song people listen to with their family , young kids sing along to. Beyonce turned a family Marshall 5 orientated song into a song that might not be appropriate for young ages. Beyonce grew up in a Christan church. So why she choose to use Ava Maria is unknown. Christians do not hold Mother Mary up that hight. Catholics think Mother Mary is close to god but Christians believe she is just the mother of Jesus.
I believe Beyonce wanted to be spirtual and since there is know other woman in the bible that Christians hold high, Mother Mary was the way to go. Or she might have felt since Mother Mary was pure , she could connect her to the pure marriage Beyonce and Jay-Z had. There might be multiple reason why Beyonce choose to cover “Ava Maria” These two song do not have much in common besides the names. But their also connect because they are both spiritual songs. One focuses on the spirituality of the Virgin Mary , when the other focuses on the spirituality of love. Both rhetors were very much passionate about the song even though ne was passionate because it connected her with her Marshall 6 past and the other with love between to famous people which is hard just as itself. Beyonce talks about her love with Jay-Z very frequently she believes it is hard to come by. Which I agree with her in most marriages between famous people they end quick with a very messy divorce but Beyonce is different maybe because it pure just like the Virgin Mary. While Celine Dion sings about the Virgin Mary because those are her Roman Catholic roots and she grew up on the song either way to interpret these two songs they will speak to you because they are very great songs.
