3. How does each writer interpret Malcolm X, his followers, the gunmen, and the significance of the assassination?
1. From the New York Times report, I felt that the writer interpreted Malcolm X’s quest like some sort of militant rebel extremist leader who is gathering an army that is going to over throw all authority. I don’t think the writer included enough about his followers; but focused more about the chaos brought about a group of Negro’s. The writer did mention the gunmen and his arrest but fails to include the other participants who eluded the scene.
2. The writer from Life magazine portrayed Malcolm X as a leader who normally discussed his “flaying the hated white man”. The article fails to mention the exact name of the suspect at hand even though his death was over a week from the articles’ posted date. I noticed instead of pointing out the significance of Malcolm X murder they tried to point out how shocking it was for residents of
Harlem that he was not being killed by a “whitey”.
3. The writer from the New York Post seemed to almost let his followers speak for his interpretation of the man Malcolm X. By taking quotes from his followers it let us interpret Malcolm X and the way the situation might have gone down from his followers’ point of view. This article fails to name the suspect with the shotgun by mentions the debacle in the hall and the events following.

4. The writer from the Associated Press interprets Malcolm X as a Black Nationalist leader and nothing more. They didn’t refer to him as a threat or dictator, just as a leader of his people. This article fails to mention much about his followers except that they were devoted. They did mention the gunmen and the exact weapons used in this offence.
5. This writer from Amsterdam News portrayed Malcolm X as “a man at 39 who might have grown to the stature of a respectable leader.” This article portrayed Malcolm X’s followers in a state of morning; they wanted vengeance for their lost. This article didn’t mention the gunmen because this article seemed to be more about how Malcolm followers’ are doing with out their leader.
4. How has each writer used language to express his or her perspective and to influence the thinking of the reader? Which language styles do you find most effective?
1. I think by taking the time period into account the wording used in the New York Time’s report, was expectable and acceptable at the time it was written. I feel that the language used was very influential toward the readers’ perception of how Malcolm X is, especially for those who didn’t know who the man was.
2. The writer seemed to have tried to almost justify his death, because he was killed by a member if his own race, as if it would have been worse a lot worse if it was done by a white man. I think the writer wanted the reader to try to visualize the scene leading to his death, describing where and the extent of his wounds.
3. I believe this language style is probably one of the better choices probably because the writer included quotes from witnesses which made the writer leave most of his bias and prejudges at the door. The writer gave accounts on what Malcolm’s followers’ had heard other people scream out while this situation was going on.
4. I think this style of language was probably one of the most effective ways to give information without producing much bias if at all. This article stated the facts at hand successfully.
