My advantage, as humanitarian student, is that I am able to look and to discuss issue in its wholeness.
I am able to distance myself from the problem, in order to get a clear picture of what it is. Such ability directly derives out of the fact that I can operate with abstract categories better than others, since my communicational finesse is being improved on everyday basis. This comes as a direct result of me perfecting my communicational skills, as this represents the essence of being an English major. In the modern world, it is absolutely necessary for the individual to be able to clearly express itself, in order to be thought of as an intelligent person. Todays employers look for the people who are able to acquire transferable skills. However, it is impossible to imagine someone being able to acquire these skills with ease, unless he is able to expand his mind on the variety of different topics. Being English major develops such flexibility better than anything else does. English course allows students to become different people for several hours, because we get to study about different historical periods and about peoples mentality, associated with these periods. This often provides an unexpected insight for the humanitarian student, when it comes to dealing with complicated socio-political issues. I think that the knowledge of English language and literature is essential for understanding the metaphysical foundations, upon which Western civilization is based. At the same time, this knowledge allows individual to be at ease, while communicating with representatives of other cultures, because English language became the tool of international communication long time ago. It is not a secret that the process of Globalization keeps getting momentum, therefore, in the future, it will be impossible to imagine a successful individual without possessing a strong communicational proficiency.
As English major, I believe that I will be able to find a right approach, when it will come to making my opinions appealing to others. This is because, while studying English literature, one also learns about the variety of psychological factors that used to define peoples behavior, throughout the history. The knowledge of English language and literature comes hand in hand with understanding the basics of psychology. The more I learn about what defined peoples worldview in the past, the easier it is going to be for me to understand what causes my contemporaries to act in way or another. Thus, we cannot refer to being an English major only within the context of obtaining information about literary matters. I believe that I am a bit of everything journalist, lawyer, historian and teacher. All of this thanks to the fact that my sense of logic is enriched with my empirical observations and with my understanding of historical dynamics.
In its turn, this is the result of English course giving me a viewing perspective on the variety of seemingly unrelated topics. I strongly believe that my decision to become an English major was the right one, because my value as individual continues to grow, as I am becoming more intelligent person by the mean of improving my communicational skills and acquiring factual information about English literature and language. I am learning how to find a right balance between the context and content, which is the necessary element of communicational finesse. I think that the ability of expressing my thoughts in clear and convincing manner is going to come handy in the future, because mental versatility will be increasingly sought for, as time goes by..
